Greeneville Astros News Release

Greeneville, TN - The Bristol Pirates (14-15) used a four-run eighth inning to knock off the Greeneville Astros (16-14) on Saturday night, 4-1, and end their seven-game home win streak. Despite the sudden deficit late in the game, the Astros still put themselves in position to get the win before ultimately coming up short.

Down 4-0 going into the bottom of the eighth, Astros centerfielder Marcos Almonte was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Then, Troy Sieber singled to put runners at first and second before both advanced a base on a fly out and wild pitch. Finally, Abraham Toro knocked in Almonte on a ground out to cut the Pirates' lead to three.

In the bottom of the ninth, with one out, the Astros loaded the bases with a Connor MacDonald walk followed by back-to-back singles from Vicente Sanchez and Migulangel Sierra. So the potential game-winning run was at the plate, but two strikeouts ended the Astros' chances.

Throughout the night, each team had collected hits, but neither was able to come up with a score through the majority of the game. Astros' starter Abdiel Saldana pitched four scoreless innings while surrendering six hits, walking one, and striking out seven. Meanwhile, Bristol's Blake Cederling went five innings without allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts.

Once the eighth inning rolled around, the fortunes turned. For the Pirates, Michael De La Cruz singled and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Then, with two outs, the Pirates connected on five consecutive singles. Four of which went for RBI.

Pirates reliever David Whitehead (2-0) picked up the win after pitching three innings and allowing one run on three hits, along with three walks and one strikeout. Nick Hutchings was awarded the save after pitching the final inning, allowing two hits, walking one, and striking out two.

The Astros will face the Pirates in the series rubber match on Sunday at 6:00pm. Newcomer Jorge Alcala will be on the mound for the Astros.
