Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - High Point native Landon Lassiter went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but Winston-Salem could not overcome Potomac starter Matthew Crownover and three relievers in the Nationals' 4-2 victory in Thursday's series opener at Pfitzner Stadium.
Crownover (1-4) logged a season-high six innings and gave up a season-low one run on just four hits. He struck out seven and retired 10 in a row at one point.
The Dash (12-14, 40-56) trailed 4-0 through five innings before breaking through in the sixth. Lassiter led off the frame with a single, and Mason Robbins pushed him to third with a one-out single. Nick Basto's sacrifice fly to deep right pushed Lassiter across for Winston-Salem's lone run against Crownover.
Potomac's starting southpaw allowed the first two men to reach in the seventh before giving way to Tommy Peterson, who struck out Michael Suiter and ended the inning on a double play ball from Cleuluis Rondon.
Winston-Salem did crack Peterson's code in the eighth to pull within a pair. Lassiter blistered a double down the left field line and scored on a Robbins single, the last of his three hits on the night. Robbins now has a team-leading 32 multi-hit efforts in 2016.
However, with Zack Collins representing the tying run, fellow lefty Justin Thomas struck out the first-rounder to escape the eighth. In the ninth, dominant right-hander Gilberto Mendez collected his fourth save by working around a two-out Suiter single. Rondon followed with an 11-pitch at-bat, but he flied out to medium-deep right to end the contest.
The Dash had entered Thursday with a .324 average in June, which was third-best in all of Minor League Baseball, but Winston-Salem managed just seven hits.
Potomac (16-9, 50-43) plated all four of its runs from the third to the fifth inning. Subbing in for Spencer Adams, who was promoted to Double-A Birmingham earlier in the day, Robinson Leyer (0-1) blanked the P-Nats for two innings before giving up a run-scoring wild pitch in the third and a Jake Lowery RBI double in the fourth.
Out of the bullpen, Drew Hasler saw his 7.2 inning scoreless streak come to an end with Alec Keller's two-run single in the fifth, which proved to be the difference in the game. After that, Hasler spun a perfect sixth before Manny Martinez ripped off two hitless frames.
This five-game, four-day series continues Friday at 7:05 p.m. from Virginia. Winston-Salem sends Jordan Stephens (4-7, 3.76 ERA) to the bump against fellow right-hander Whit Mayberry (2-1, 5.09 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
The Dash return home Monday for a seven-game homestand that features an All-You-Can-Eat Night on Tuesday, a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday and a Fireworks Friday, presented by Mast General Store. For tickets, call the Baker Roofing Box Office at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
