Four-goal third stops streaking Jackals 5-1

December 29, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

Scott Reynolds' shorthanded goal thirty-four seconds into the third period broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Cincinnati Cyclones to a 5-1 win over the Elmira Jackals before the seventh sellout of the season with 4,181 fans at First Arena. The loss dropped the Jackals three points behind the Cyclones in the North Division race.

Reynolds' game-winning goal was set up by a pinpoint feed off of the right wing by Barrett Ehgoetz, spotting Reynolds cutting back door and needing only to put his stick out to deflect the pass behind Jackals goaltender Joel Martin (38 saves).

The clubs, playing for first place in the division, were square at a goal a piece at the end of two periods despite a large territorial edge to the visitors. The Cyclones pumped 22 shots on Martin in the middle period while just five, and held the overall advantage of 31-14 after two periods.

Billy Irish-Baker opened the scoring 3:35 into the game and two seconds after Cincinnati's first power play expired, flipping home a point blank effort for his fifth of the season.

The Jackals countered late in the middle frame when Benoit Doucet wheeled to the slot untouched and zipped a snap shot over the glove hand of Cedrick Desjardins (18 saves) with 4:16 left in the second to make it 1-1.

After the shorthanded strike that put the Cyclones up for good, Elmira had a chance to tie the contest on a three-on-one break, but Frank Littlejohn ripped a hot over the net that led to rush the other way.

Jean-Michel Daoust appeared to have given Cincinnati a 3-1 lead when he beat Martin with a drive from the left wing circle that looked to have gone under the crossbar. Referee Ghislain Hebert signaled a goal, but the goal judge failed to turn the light.

With the Jackals lodging a mild protest, Hebert consulted with one of the linesmen before talking with the goal judge. After the visit, Hebert reversed his call and the game reverted back to 2-1.

Unable to take advantage of the reversal, the Jackals gave up goals thirty-seven seconds apart moments later to see any hopes of a comeback dashed.

Cory Urquhart netted his fourth of the year at 13:45 followed by a taunt in the direction of the First Arena goal judge and was followed up by Daoust's league-leading 23rd of the season at 14:22. Dauost's celebration antics sparked a line brawl thirty-five seconds later with Chris Busby initiating the sequence following a whistle on a Martin save in the Jackals zone.

The brawl featured Daoust eventually dropping the gloves with Brett Pilkington, Trevor Hendrikx and Travis Fuller dueling, and goaltenders Martin and Desjardins meeting at center ice in what amounted to a two-punch knockout by Martin.

Cincinnati went on the power play for the remaining 5:03 and finished out a bizarre third period with a man-up goal by Conrad Martin against emergency back-up Maxime Joyal (3 saves) for a final of 5-1.

The loss ended two Jackals streaks: a six-game home streak and a ten-game points streak (8-0-1-1).

Elmira returns to action with a New Year's Eve visit to Johnstown Monday in the first ever visit to the historic Cambria County War Memorial. Game time is set for 6 p.m. with radio coverage on MAGIC FM (92.7/97.7) set for 5:30 p.m. with the Voice of the Jackals, Grady Whittenburg, on the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off.
