Former Steamer Finishes 5th in Rookie of the Year Voting

December 23, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

Former Edenton Steamer, Billy Burns, finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting after a near historic season for the Oakland Athletics.

Burns led the A's in batting average (.294), runs (70), base hits (153), triples (9), and stolen bases (26). Furthermore, he also led AL rookies in stolen bases, multiple hit games (47), and total hits on the season, helping him to a .294 batting average that was good for second best in Oakland history by a rookie, shy of Mitchell Page's .307 in 1977.

The electrifying outfielder shined not only with his bat but had a knack for saving runs with his glove as well, routinely making highlight-reel plays in center for Oakland. All of which helped him receive one second place vote and three third place votes in the ROY voting. Carlos Correa of the Houston Astros ultimately was named the 2015 American League Rookie of the Year, with Francisco Lindor of the Cleveland Indians coming in second.

During his time in the Coastal Plain League Burns was an All-Star for the 2010 Edenton Steamers, batting .294 with nine doubles, two triples, one home run, 25 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. The former Mercer standout also scored 35 runs, good for fourth most in the league trailing the leader by only four.
