Frisco RoughRiders News Release

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, the Philadelphia Phillies plan to recall Jorge Alfaro, a former catcher for the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. He will have a chance to make his Major League debut Friday night in a road game against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Alfaro is the 147th former RoughRiders player to reach the big leagues.

Alfaro, 23, has spent the entire season with Double-A Reading in the Eastern League. The Sincelejo, Colombia native posted a .279 batting average in 89 games with 13 home runs and 60 RBI this year. He also threw out 44 percent of base-stealers, well above his career average of 30 percent. Alfaro is the top catching prospect in the Phillies organization, No. 4 overall in the farm system, and No. 64 in all of baseball, according to MLBPipeline.com.

The Phillies acquired Alfaro in a trade with Texas last year at the trading deadline, when Texas sent six players to Philadelphia on July 31 in exchange for pitchers Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman. At the time of the trade, Alfaro was ranked the Rangers No. 6 prospect by MLBPipeline.com.

In 70 games with Frisco in parts of the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Alfaro had a .255 batting average with nine home runs and 35 RBI. He threw out 31 percent of base-stealers in 453 1/3 innings logged at catcher with the RoughRiders. Alfaro was named a MiLB.com Rangers organization All-Star in 2013 and 2014.

Alfaro was selected to the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in 2013 and 2014, and he was a Mid-Season All-Star in the South Atlantic League (2013), Carolina League (2014), Texas League (2015), and Eastern League (2016).

Alfaro was signed by the Rangers as an international free agent on January 19, 2010 at the age of 16.

Alfaro joins eight former Riders who have made the Major Leagues for the first time this season: Nomar Mazara (2014-2015 with Frisco, debuted with Rangers), Brett Nicholas (2013 with Frisco, Rangers), Cody Ege (2015 with Frisco, Miami Marlins), Matt Bush (2016 with Frisco, Rangers), Jared Hoying (2012-2013 with Frisco, Rangers), Richard Bleier (2012-2013 with Frisco, New York Yankees), Jose Leclerc (2015-2016 with Frisco, Rangers), and Jake Thompson (2014-2015 with Frisco, Phillies).

The Riders conclude a four-game road series against the San Antonio Missions Friday at 7:05 p.m.
