Former NHL Player Returning to Gems

Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH - Veteran player Damian Surma will be returning to the Dayton Gems for the 2011-2012.

Surma was acquired by the Gems just before the CHL trade deadline at the beginning of February last season. In 24 regular season games with the Gems, Surma amassed 21 points on six goals and 15 assists.

During the postseason, Surma also played a key role in keeping each game close with the Rapid City Rush. Surma averaged a point per game and was one of only two players on the Gems roster to record multiple goals during the postseason.

Only Surma and Brandon Naurato scored multiple goals for the Gems during the 2011 playoffs. Each player recorded two goals.

"Damian came to us at the trade deadline last year and brought a tremendous veteran presence to our team," said Head Coach Brian Gratz.

While the stat sheet helps show his presence on the ice, Surma also brings top-level experience to the Gems' locker room as well.

He is currently the only Gems player who has NHL experience. In two games with the Carolina Hurricanes, Surma scored a goal and an assist.

"I hope to be a bigger part of the team this season. I came in a little late last season in the trade from Evansville," said Surma. "I hope to be a bigger part of the leadership this season and do everything I can to help out the team."

In addition to playing in the CHL and NHL, Surma has spent time in five other leagues in the United States. He also played professional hockey for three years in Italy.

In all, Surma has played with 12 different teams since being drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the sixth round of the 1999 NHL Draft.

The 771 games he has played during his career are among the most of any player in the CHL. His 132 playoff games also rank Surma near the top of the CHL in terms of post season experience.

With Surma returning to Dayton, it's the first time since 2005 he has spent consecutive seasons with the same organization. The last franchise Surma spent multiple years with was with the Florida Everblades from 2003-2005.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Dayton Gems.
