Former NHL Enforcer and Fan Favorite Trevor Gillies Returns

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have agreed to terms with veteran forward Trevor Gillies, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky announced today.

"To have Trevor Gillies back is huge," said Warsofsky. "He's been around the NHL and at every level of pro hockey. He knows what it means to be a pro. On the ice, as our fans know, he sets the tone night in and night out with that physical element. What people don't get to see is what he brings to the team in the locker room. His leadership is a huge piece of the puzzle in winning a championship."

Gillies, 37, has re-signed with South Carolina as he begins his 18th season of professional hockey. The former NHL forward served as an alternate captain for the Stingrays during the 2015-16 season and quickly became a fan favorite. He skated in 46 games for South Carolina, racking up 107 penalty minutes and adding two assists. Never afraid to stand up for his teammates, Gillies also skated in all 19 playoffs games for the Stingrays, collecting 25 penalty minutes and one assist.

"Talking with Ryan Warsofsky and some of my teammates, I am very excited about coming back for the upcoming season," said Gillies. "How it ended last year was a tough way to lose, but with the nucleolus we have coming back, and the new pieces we will add, I think we have a great shot at winning a championship. I'm still playing because I want nothing more than to win a championship in South Carolina in the twilight of my career."

The Cambridge, Ontario native has played over 700 games at the NHL, AHL, and ECHL level, accumulating over 3,000 penalty minutes. He has appeared in 57 career NHL games, collecting 261 penalty minutes. After making his NHL debut with Anaheim during the 2005-2006 season, Gillies spent parts of three years with the New York Islanders from 2009-2012. As a member of the Islanders during the 2010-2011 season, Gillies skated in 39 games, scoring two goals and adding 165 penalty minutes. That season, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Gillies fought several NHL heavyweights including the late Derek Boogaard.

"After the year we had last year, it was an easy decision to come back to South Carolina," said Gillies. "I love my teammates, and the group we had was like one big family. Everyone bought in. I love playing for the coaches, working with the staff, and we are treated so well by Rob Concannon and the Zucker Family. I love the Lowcountry, and it's great being close to my home and having my family be able to see me play. It's a real honor to wear the Stingrays' crest."
