Former LumberKings Paul Fry Called Up to Major Leagues

CLINTON, IA - The Baltimore Oreioles have purchased the contract of former Clinton LumberKings left-handed pitcher Paul Fry, making him the 269th player to reach the Major Leagues via Clinton since 1937. Fry is the 28th player in franchise history to reach the big leagues since the LumberKings became a Class A Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners in 2009.

Fry, 24, began the season in the Mariners organization pitching in one game for the Tacoma Rainiers. On April 14th, the lefty was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for $198,000 in international pool money after the Mariners has designated him for assignment. He made two appearances for the Orioles Triple-A affiliate Norfolk Tides. Overall, Fry is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in three bullpen outings this season to go with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Mariners selected Fry during in the 17th round of the 2013 draft out of St. Clair Community College. During his only season in Clinton, 2014, he went 4-4 with a 2.71 ERA in 38 relief appearances, walking 33, and striking out 77. His ERA ranked second best on that team, among qualifiers. A year later, in 2015, he turned is best professional season, thus far, by posting a 1.80 ERA in Double-A Jackson and being named Seattle Mariners Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year.

He has the reputation as one of the hardest pitchers in the minor leagues to homer off of, in his 240 minor league innings he has given up just five home run.

Fry is the first former LumberKing to make the Major Leagues in the 2017 season.
