Former Hawks Battle for College Title

Waterloo, Iowa - More than two dozen former Waterloo Black Hawks still have the chance to win the 2018 NCAA Division I Hockey Championship as the top schools from across the country take the ice to begin national tournament play this weekend.

At least one Waterloo alumnus could take the ice for 14 out of the 16 teams in the field. Two programs - Minnesota-Duluth and Ohio State - each have four Hawks apiece on their roster. In total, 26 former Black Hawks are seeking to celebrate a title on April 7th when the Championship Game is played at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Some alumni highlights at the college level this season include:

- Freshman Shane Bowers helped Boston University reach the tournament with a 21-13-4 record. After skating for Waterloo last winter, Bowers recorded 16 goals and a total of 31 points during his first year in school.

- Defenseman Alec McCrea had one of the best plus/minus margins in college hockey. His +21 mark tied for sixth nationally. The junior from Cornell also recorded a dozen points.

- After sitting out for a season due to NCAA transfer rules, junior Peter Krieger was one of the leading scorers for the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth. With 11 goals and 19 assists, Krieger was second in team points while playing in 40 games.

- In addition to representing the United States during the 2018 World Junior Championships, freshman Mikey Anderson was a consistent contributor for UMD. He notched five goals and 17 assists during his 35 appearances.

More details about the former Hawks who are participating may be found below. Regional sites for games this weekend are in Sioux Falls (West), Allentown (Midwest), Worcester (Northeast), and Bridgeport (East).

Last season, the University of Denver won the NCAA title. The Pioneers roster included former Hawks Michael Davies, Tyson McLellan, and Blake Hillman. All three remain at UD as the school tries to defend its championship beginning Saturday against Penn State.

The Black Hawks' current roster includes 16 players with NCAA Division I commitments. Two schools in this season's tournament field - Providence and Minnesota-Duluth - include two recruits apiece (Providence: Matt and Kyle Koopman; UMD: Jackson Cates and Hunter Lellig).

Waterloo's next home game is Saturday versus the Sioux City Musketeers. The 7:05 p.m. game will be Panther Pride Night, with special guests on hand from the University of Northern Iowa. Tickets for all college students will be $8 when purchased in advance with a college ID or $9 on game day.
