Former ECHL Defenseman of the Year Returns to K-Wings
December 1, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - The Kalamazoo Wings added to their blue line by inking Sacha Guimond to an ECHL contract, the team announced Tuesday.
Guimond, 24, gears up for his second tour of duty with Kalamazoo in 2015. The defenseman suited up in 42 games for the Wings in 2014-15 before finishing the season in the Slovak Extraliga.
"We're thrilled to welcome Sacha back to Kalamazoo," K-Wings head coach Nich Bootland said. "He's a high-caliber defenseman that will see the ice in all situations."
A native of Ville-Marie, Quebec, Guimond burst onto the scene during his rookie campaign in 2012 with the San Francisco Bulls and Gwinnett Gladiators. In 58 games (33 with SF, 25 with GWT), Guimond led ECHL defensemen with 37 assists and 59 points, earning him ECHL Defenseman of the Year honors. He was also named to the ECHL's First All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team that season.
Guimond's professional experience also includes eight games in the American Hockey League with Worcester, Norfolk, and Utica.
Before turning pro, Guimond appeared in 123 junior games with North Bay (OJHL), London (OHL), and Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL), where he racked up 75 points over three seasons.
Guimond will wear number 44 for Kalamazoo and is currently on the reserve list.
In a separate transaction, Mackenze Stewart was re-assigned from the Kalamazoo Wings to the Utica Comets by the Vancouver Canucks.
Stewart, 20, has skated in ten games this season between Kalamazoo and Utica, and has registered 22 penalty minutes.
The Kalamazoo Wings return home on December 11 and 12 for two games against the Brampton Beast on country weekend, presented by Midwest Communications. The weekend will feature special concourse games and activities, along with a contest for the best country wear.
Single-game tickets are now on sale! Tickets can be purchased at kwings.com or at the Wings Event Center box office. Box office hours are Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. A $2 discount is applied on all tickets purchased before the date of the game.
