Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs announced on Monday that former player Derek Schutz has been hired as a part-time assistant coach.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity," said Schutz. "My time playing with the Chiefs was fantastic and the organization always treated me well, so I welcome any chance to be a part of that again."
Schutz played for Spokane from 1994-2000, scoring 89 goals and 118 assists for 207 points in 321 regular season games. He ranks sixth in franchise history in career games played, t-25th in goals and t-24th in points. He also piled up 617 career penalty minutes, 8th-most by a Chief.
Recognized in the organization's "Top 30 Chiefs in 30 Years" list, Schutz was a two-year captain for Spokane, wearing the "C" during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. He was selected in the third round (60th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.
In his new role, Schutz will assist during select home practices and do some individual on-ice instruction.
