Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A third period goal and the only tally in a three-round shootout gave the Fargo Force a 5-4 win against the Waterloo Black Hawks Friday at Young Arena.
Brendan Harms was set up for the equalizer from behind the Waterloo net with 10:47 remaining in regulation, making the score 4-4 through the end of the period and overtime. Both teams were also turned away on their first two shootout chances. Jordan Nelson found the net in the third round and Brendan Jensen fought off Vince Hinostroza at the other end of the rink to wrap up the contest.
The Force had opened the scoring when none of the four Black Hawks in the defensive zone went to pick up a loose puck in the first period. The turnover at 8:51 allowed Harms to feed Dave Gust coming on a change, and Gust's shot popped over the shoulder of Cal Petersen and into the net. Waterloo tied the game 1:28 later; Pijus Rulevicius was camped in front of the Fargo net, in position to redirect Mitch DeMario's shot from the right point for an equalizer. The Hawks jumped in front at 12:00 after breaking out of their own zone for an odd-man rush, capped by Justin Kloos' shot to the top corner from the left wing circle.
The Hawks and Force alternated for two goals apiece in the middle frame. Austin Ortega led off with a power play marker at 2:56, fetching the carom of an errant shot off the end wall and banging it into an open side. At 4:13, Kloos caught the Force in a change for his second of the game, but just 16 seconds later, Fargo tied it again, when Dominic Toninato redirected a centering feed into the net from the top of the crease. However, Waterloo had the final tally, which was the difference at intermission. Mark Friedman jumped into a rush and lifted a chance to the top corner off a pass from Taylor Cammarata.
Fargo outshot Waterloo 44-37 during regulation and overtime. Petersen made 40 saves in the performance, including two breakaway stops in the extra period. Jensen made 33 saves for his fourth win of the season versus the Hawks.
Waterloo's five-game home stand hits its midpoint Saturday, when Waterloo hosts the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The 7:05 contest is one of the final remaining games in the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup series. Good seats still remain for the matchup and can be purchased online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680.
