Akron RubberDucks News Release
Squirrels 2 RubberDucks 1 (10)
WP: Tyler Mizenko (2-4) LP: J.P. Feyereisen (4-3) SV: Chase Johnson (1)
Summary
Richmond third baseman Christian Arroyo drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 10th inning, allowing the Flying Squirrels to slip by the Akron RubberDucks, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series Monday night at Canal Park.
Turning Point
Richmond took the lead in the top of the 10th when Steve Lerud walked to lead off the inning against Akron reliever J.P. Feyereisen (4-3). Steven Duggar then singled, moving pinch-runner Darren Ford to third. Arroyo, San Francisco's top prospect and an EL All-Star, followed with a single to right field to drive in Ford and give the Squirrels a 2-1 lead. Arroyo was 2-5 on the night.
Winging It
Both starting pitchers were sharp, but neither figured in the decision. Michael Peoples started for Akron and allowed just one run over seven innings. He sat down the first 12 hitters before Carlos Moncrief singled to lead off the fifth inning. Richmond's Dan Slania scattered four hits and one run over a career-high eight innings. Daniel Salters broke up Slania's no-hit bid with a double in the fifth inning. He scored on a single by Claudio Bautista to give Akron a 1-0 lead. Moncrief delivered an RBI single in the sixth off Peoples to tie the game at 1-1. Slania walked one; Peoples issued no walks.
Duck Tales
Salters was 2-4. Newcomer Greg Allen hit lead-off for the RubberDucks and collected his first Double-A hit with a single in the eighth inning. Jordan Smith had a pinch-hit single with two outs in the ninth but was stranded when Richmond's Chase Johnson got Allen to ground out to end the game. Johnson earned his first save.
