Flyers Set to Begin Training Camp

November 10, 2006 - NBA G League (G League)
Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas, November 10, 2006 - The 2005-06 defending NBA Development League regular season champion Fort Worth Flyers will hold training camp from Sunday, November 12 through Wednesday, November 22. Practices will be held at the team's official training facility, Nolan Catholic High School, located at 4501 Bridge Street in Fort Worth. A select number of workouts will also be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

"We are excited to have all of our players join us, and now we can begin the process of building a team that will help us contend for a championship," said Flyers head coach Sidney Moncrief.

Joining returning veterans Deji Akindele, Kelenna Azubuike, Luke Schenscher and Anthony Terrell will be 13 new players competing for roster spots. All D-League teams will trim their roster to 12 players by November 15 and announce final roster cuts to 10 players on November 22.

Among the new faces is Kevin Burleson, the team's first round choice in the 2006 D-League Draft. The 6-3, 205-pound guard spent the 2005-06 season with the Charlotte Bobcats and also attended training camp with the team this fall. Burleson appeared in 39 games for the Bobcats, making one start, and averaged 1.8 points, 1.2 assists and 8.7 minutes per game. Burleson played collegiately at the University of Minnesota where he finished his career ranked second in Minnesota history with 440 assists, third all-time in three-point field goals made (148) and fourth in career steals (157).

In addition to Terrell, a native of Rowlett, Texas, the Flyers' training camp roster consists of several players with connections to the Metroplex. Former Texas Christian University standout Corey Santee was allocated to the Flyers by the NBA Development League earlier this month in addition to Fort Worth native Tommy Swanson. Terrance Thomas, selected from the team's local player tryout, played prep basketball at A. Maceo Smith High School in Dallas.

Santee, 6-2, 200, established himself as one of the most heralded players in TCU history, finishing his career as the school's all-time assist leader in assists (575) and 3-pointers made (243), second in scoring with 1,832 points and second in steals (155). Swanson, who attended North Crowley High School, had a successful career at Baylor University. The 6-10, 225-pound center played in 90 career games and made 72 career starts for the Bears, and his 65 career blocks ranks eighth in school history.

Thomas, a native of Waco, Texas, played collegiately at Baylor University. The 6-6, 230-pound forward led the Bears in scoring, rebounding, three-pointers, double-doubles and minutes played during his senior season.

The Flyers will play the Austin Toros in a preseason matchup on Saturday, November 18 at 1 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Doors will open at noon, and the game will be free and open to the public. Prior to the game, the team will host a celebration complete with free birthday cake to commemorate the team's one-year anniversary in Fort Worth. A free throw contest open to youth age 12 and under will be held during halftime, and the winner will receive a trip for two to Los Angeles to watch the Flyers take on the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

The Fort Worth Flyers home opener is Friday, December 1 against the Bakersfield Jam at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The regular season tips off Saturday, November 25 against the Austin Toros in Austin, Texas.

Season tickets begin at $99, and flex book and group ticket packages are also available. For more information, log on to fwflyers.com or call (817) 698-8333.
