Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas November 23 - Vonteego Cummings knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with 10.3 seconds remaining in the game to propel the Fort Worth Flyers to a hard fought 81-80 victory over the Tulsa 66ers at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

"I thought our guys did a great job of fighting through what was a difficult first half and playing better in the second half to come away with a win," said Flyers head coach Sam Vincent. "A lot of guys really dug deep, showed a lot of courage and pride and played great basketball."

Both teams started slowly in the first half, and the 66ers led 38-34 at halftime. The 66ers got off to a fast start in the second half as Tony Kitchings came off the bench to score 8 of his game high 18 points in the third quarter. The 66ers led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, but the Flyers rallied to overcome the deficit by tying the game at 76 with three minutes left in the game. Following a 3-pointer by Bernard King, the 66ers took the advantage to go up by three points. But the Flyers defense held by blocking two key baskets down the stretch, and Cummings' 3-pointer sealed the victory in the Flyers' inaugural home opener.

Five Flyers posted double figures. Ime Udoka led the Flyers with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Luke Schenscher, Vonteego Cummings and Keith Langford all finished with 12 points, and Deji Akindele chipped in with 10 points. The Flyers dominated from long range, connecting on 7 of 10 shots from behind the arch.

Including Kitchings, the 66ers had four players score in double digits. Bernard King finished with 17 points and 10 assists, and Houston native John Lucas and Ersan Ilyasova added 12 points apiece.

The victory lifts the Flyers to a 2-1 record in the D-League, and the 66ers fell to 1-2. The Flyers will host the Fayetteville Patriots on Friday, Nov. 25, and the 66ers will travel to Albuquerque to square off with the Thunderbirds in back to back outings on Nov. 25 and 27.
