Flight win home opener over Riverdragons

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Nov. 27 – Trailing by three after three quarters, the Huntsville Flight rallied passed the Columbus Riverdragons in the fourth quarter for a 90-87 win in National Basketball Development League action at the Von Braun Center arena. The Flight (1-2) picked up their first win of the season in their home opener. The Riverdragons fell to 2-1.

With the score 64-61 in favor of Columbus, Flight forward Rodney Bias and guard Bernard King quickly got the home team going to start the final period. Bias had two baskets off of offensive rebounds, and King had 13 points in the fourth. Huntsville made 15 of 21 free throw attempts down the stretch to help seal the win.

“This was a big win for us, especially with it being our home opener,” Flight head coach Ralph Lewis said. “We showed a lot of poise in the fourth quarter.”

Flight center Mengke Bateer scored seven first-quarter points as the Flight took a 15-10 lead. Reed Rawlings and Derrick Zimmerman combined for 11 points to help Columbus get the score to 18-16 Huntsville at the end of the period.

Columbus took control of the game in the second quarter, and maintained a lead until the decisive fourth quarter turned the game in favor of the Flight. Bateer and King each finished with 17 points, and Joe Shipp had 16. Bias, who set an NBDL record with 22 rebounds against Columbus last season, finished with 19 rebounds and six points. Ricky Minard led Columbus with 21 points, and Adam Harrington added 18 points off the bench.

The Flight continue their home stand against the Fayetteville Patriots on Monday night. The Riverdragons travel to Asheville Monday night to take on the Altitude.
