On Friday, Aug. 16, the Flight Staff will visit Chapman Elementary (2006 Rueben Dr., 256-428-7080). At both events, students will receive Flight Read to Achieve promotional items, including a sampling of books provided by Scholastic, Inc., as well as class and grade level reading goals that will lead to free Flight game tickets.

Read to Achieve is a year-round program to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly to children. Reaching an estimated 50 million children a year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. Efforts includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books through a variety of reading events and book fairs, as well as the development of essay contests and on-line programs. In addition to being supported by all 29 NBA teams, 16 WNBA teams, and eight NBDL teams, Read to Achieve is supported by the NBA's officials, parents and wives of players organizations, and the NBA Players Association and Retired Player Association. Read to Achieve expands the NBA's existing partnerships with Scholastic Inc., and Reading Is Fundamental.

The NBDL, the NBA's minor league includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.). The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella.
