Flash Return Home to Face Seattle Reign
Elma, N.Y. - On Sunday, the Western New York Flash will return to Sahlen's Stadium for the first time since May 24th with a couple headlines. Not only are the Flash unbeaten in their last seven games, the team can now say the world's all-time leading scorer is one of their own.
Abby Wambach, along with midfielder Carli Lloyd, return to Western New York (5-2-3, 18 points) on Sunday for the team's showdown with Hope Solo and the Seattle Reign (0-9-1, 1 point) at 4:05 p.m.
On Thursday, with four goals in a 5-0 U.S. Women's National Team win over South Korea, Wambach broke Mia Hamm's all-time international goal record of 158 goals. The Rochester native entered the game with 156 tallies and extended her career total to 160 goals with all four goals scored in the first half.
Along with Abby's accolade, the Flash are making headlines as well, having not lost a game since April 27th. The Flash posted three wins at Sahlen's Stadium before embarking on a four-game road trip, all that ended in wins or draws. Over the June trip, the Flash posted eight points in four games and now sit in third place in the NWSL with 18 points.
The Flash are coming off an exciting 2-2 draw at Chicago, with Brittany Taylor scoring the game-tying goal in the 89th minute to claim a point for the Flash. Pushing up from the backline, Taylor one-touch volleyed a long ball from Alex Sahlen to beat Chicago keeper Taylor Vancil. Adriana Martin scored the first Flash goal in the 13th minute on a second-effort cross from Vicki DiMartino.
The Flash will also be powered by the return of Samantha Kerr and Jodi-Ann Robinson, who are coming off duties with the Australian and Canadian National Teams, respectively.
Seattle enters Sunday's game coming off a 2-0 loss at Portland on June 16th. The Reign, who are winless through 10 games, entered halftime at 0-0 but the Thorns posted two goals in the second half to take the win.
The Reign will also see the return of USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo, who made her NWSL debut on May 25th after recovering from wrist surgery. Megan Rapinoe, who set-up Abby's record-breaking goal off a corner kick, is on the Reign roster but is isn't expected to make her NWSL debut until June 29th. Jessica Fishlock, who was on duty with the Wales National Team, and Canadian internationals Emily Zurer and Kaylyn Kyle will also be suited up for Sunday's game.
With the signing of Rapinoe, the Reign also added former USWNT defender Stephanie Cox who won a gold medal with the USA in 2008. With both transactions, the Reign were above the 20-player roster limit and waived Lyndsey Patterson and Tiffany Cameron.
While the Flash have scored nine goals in June, the Reign have yet to tally, being shutout in their three games this month.
The Flash will also be partnering with Watkins Glen International on Sunday to promote Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen, a race that takes place June 28-30 at the Glen. The first 500 fans to register at the game will receive two free complimentary tickets to the race, while the Flash will sport specialty jerseys for the contest. Those jerseys will be raffled off following the game with all proceeds going to Camp Good Days and Special Times. Raffle tickets can be purchased on Sunday at the Flash Shack or at the Watkins Glen International table.
The game will be aired on Live Sports, while fans can also follow along on Twitter using the hashtags #WNYFvSRFC, #WNYF and #NWSL.
Tickets to all Flash home games are available for purchase by calling the Sahlen's Stadium box office at (585) 454-KICK or online at wnyflash.com.
