MADISON, WI - The Madison Capitols, a member of the United States Hockey League, picked 19 players - 12 forwards and seven defensemen - in Phase II of the 2017 USHL Draft on Tuesday.

The Capitols began Phase II of the Draft by picking Eden Prairie, Minnesota native defenseman Louis Roehl in the first round. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound blueliner was chosen fifth overall and recorded 34 points (4-30=34) and 36 penalty minutes in 57 games with the Minnesota Wilderness during the 2016-17 season. Roehl also appeared in three games with the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks last season.

The Capitols completed their 45-man roster through 19-rounds of the Phase II Draft.

"We thought the draft went well; we were able to draft some guys we think will step right in and contribute right away," said Capitols Head Coach and General Manager Garrett Suter. "We are excited for all the guys we drafted and look forward to tryouts in June and next season."

Madison drafted five Wisconsin natives - forward Aaron Swanson of Sun Prairie in the seventh round, 104th overall; left wing Trey LaBarge of Hudson in the 10th round, 152nd overall; defenseman Alec Semandel of Waunakee in the 12th round, 184th overall; forward Jake Osiecki of Verona in the 15th round, 232nd overall; and forward Hunter Larsen of Waukesha in the 18th round, 280th overall.

The Capitols drafted left wing Joseph Abate in the fourth round, 59th overall. The 6-foot-1.5, 180-pound native of Bloomingdale, IL, recorded 42 points (13-29=42) and 117 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Janesville Jets last season.
