Five Tribe Errors Push Sox to 9-8 Win

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Despite three doubles from first baseman Matt Hague and home runs from right fielder Jerry Sands, catcher Tony Sanchez and third baseman Jared Goedert, five Tribe errors helped the Pawtucket Red Sox (27-19) earn a 9-8 victory over the Indianapolis Indians (32-15) on Tuesday morning at McCoy Stadium.

Despite several Indians turning in impressive offensive efforts in Tuesday's series finale in Pawtucket, a season-worst five errors helped the PawSox push across three unearned runs on their way to the 9-8 victory.

The miscues began to haunt the Tribe right away on Tuesday morning, as a missed catch error on attempted steal by Pawtucket DH Justin Henry in the first inning, allowed him to move all the way to third. Two batters later, RF Bryce Brentz capitalized on the mistake by lining a run-scoring infield single to plate Henry and give the PawSox the early 1-0 lead.

Indianapolis then took over temporary control with a run in the second and two more in the third, beginning with Hague lining the first of this three doubles on the day to lead-off the second, before eventually scoring on a groundout by LF Brett Carroll. Back-to-back two-out doubles in the following frame pushed across two more Tribe tallies as SS Josh Harrison plated CF Alex Presley, before Hague brought home Harrison with his second two-bagger of the day.

Pawtucket, however, responded with a solo blast from Brentz to lead off the fourth that brought them with-in striking distance and a four-run fifth that put them ahead for good. A mixture of walks, wild pitches and miscues led to the key four-run fifth for PawSox, beginning with a lead-off base-on-balls from former Indians INF Brock Holt.

Following Holt's free pass, C Alberto Rosario lifted a double to center before a wild pitch allowed Holt to trot plateward. A walk to Henry and two Tribe throwing errors, brought home another score and put a runner on third where another former Indians INF, Drew Sutton, laid down a safety squeeze bunt to push across another tally. Finally, CF Ronald Bermudez, doubled home the final score of the frame to give the PawSox a 6-3 advantage.

Indianapolis got a run back in the sixth, thanks to a solo shot off the bat of the suddenly surging Jerry Sands. The longball was Sands' second in as many days and third over his last four games.

However, the Indians' multitude of miscues continued as the PawSox plated three more scores in the seventh, one on a Tribe throwing error, one on a wild pitch and one a two-out base knock by LF Ryan Dent. The three seventh inning scores advanced the Pawtucket run total to nine, and ultimately the PawSox needed each and everyone of those scores as Indianapolis mounted a furious final frames comeback.

The Indians once again used their power to cut into the Pawtucket lead, beginning with a two-run home run off the bat of Sanchez, which plated Carroll, who drew a walk to lead-off the top of the eighth. Goedert then cut the PawSox advantage down to just one, when he followed a double by Harrison with a two-run roundtripper to center in the top of the ninth.

With two outs in the ninth and trailing 9-8, Sanchez drew a hit by pitch, before Sands hit a ball that missed a go-ahead two-run homer by just feet, instead landing in the glove of Bermudez to end the game. Despite the tough defeat the Indians bats have come alive in the month of May as the Tribe offense has now belted 22 homers in 20 games played.

Neither starting pitcher fared well on the morning as LHP Andy Oliver (5.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO) was the victim of some Tribe miscues and his own control and suffered the loss to fall 3-2, while Pawtucket starter Chris Hernandez (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) lasted only four innings and didn't figure in the final decision. PawSox reliever Pedro Beato (2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, SO) instead earned the victory to improve to 3-1, while closer Anthony Carter (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 SO) picked up his sixth save.

Following an off day on Wednesday, Indianapolis will head to Buffalo for a four-game series beginning with a contest on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Indians are expected to send RHP Brandon Cumpton (3-2, 2.83) to the mound, while the Bisons are scheduled to start RHP Justin Germano (3-3, 6.37)
