Five TinCaps Named MWL All-Stars

Fort Wayne, IN - Five Fort Wayne TinCaps were named Midwest League All-Stars as the rosters were announced on Friday. League managers selected INF James Darnell, OF Sawyer Carroll, RHPs Anthony Bass and Brad Brach and LHP Zach Herr to the Eastern Division All-Star team.
Darnell, 22, is batting .293 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. He leads all of Minor League Baseball with 50 walks this year. A second-round selection by the Padres in last year's draft out of the University of South Carolina, Darnell was rated San Diego's #10 prospect entering the season by Baseball America. He had the first TinCaps hit in Parkview Field history, a two-run homer over the left-field wall on April 16th .
Carroll, 23, holds a .295 average with two home runs and 31 RBIs. He leads the TinCaps with six outfield assists and has also totaled 10 stolen bases. The Padres drafted Carroll in the supplemental third round last year out of the University of Kentucky.
Bass, 21, is 3-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 11 starts for Fort Wayne. He was the TinCaps' Opening Day starter and was named the MWL's first Pitcher of the Week, firing 15 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season. A product of Wayne State (MI) University, Bass was a 5th -round pickup last year.
Brach, 23, has been one of the most dominant closers in the league this year. He paces the MWL with 15 saves and 24 appearances, posting a 3-2 record and a 1.13 ERA. Brach opened the season with 11 consecutive scoreless frames and converted his first eight save opportunities. He was a starting pitcher at Monmouth University before being drafted by San Diego last year in the 42nd round.
Herr, 22, has teamed with Brach to form a sensational 1-2 punch at the back of the bullpen. A setup man, Herr started the year with 13.2 scoreless innings. He is 3-1 with a 3.60 ERA and is tied for second in the league with 23 appearances. Herr was selected by the Padres in the 38th round of last year's draft out of the University of Nebraska.
The 2009 Midwest League All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23rd at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton, IA.
The TinCaps have just seven more home games before the All-Star break. They host the Lansing Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) Friday at 7:05pm on Star Wars Night at Parkview Field; a fireworks show will follow the game. The South Bend Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) come to Parkview Field for a 7:05pm game on Saturday with another post-game fireworks display on tap. The homestand closes with a 3:05pm start on Sunday. The TinCaps return to Parkview Field on Wednesday, June 10th for a four-game set against the Dayton Dragons (Class-A Cincinnati Reds).
