Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - Five Saint John Sea Dogs players and prospects have been invited to Hockey Canada's National Teams' Summer Showcase next month.

Hockey Canada announced late Monday 196 players have been tabbed to take part in camps for five teams in three different age groups.

Defenceman Thomas Chabot and forward Mathieu Joseph are among 41 players slated to join Canada's National Junior Team Summer Development Camp.

Chabot, 19, has played three seasons with the Sea Dogs. The native of Ste-Marie-de-Beauce, Quebec, posted three assists in five games for Canada at last year's IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and had an assist in two games for Team QMJHL at the 2015 CHL Canada-Russia Series. He also helped Canada win a bronze medal at the 2015 IIHF U18 World Championship.

Joseph, 19, has also played three seasons with Saint John. He scored twice in two games for Team QMJHL at the 2015 CHL Canada-Russia Series.

The National Junior Team Summer Development Camp goes July 30-Aug. 2. A four-game series against the USA, Sweden and Finland runs Aug. 3-6 in Plymouth, Michigan.

Forwards Joe Veleno and Shane Bowers join 42 other players at Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 selection camp.

Veleno, a 16-year-old from Kirkland, Quebec, just completed his first season with the Sea Dogs after being granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada. Bowers, the 17-year-old Halifax-native, was selected by Saint John in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2016 QMJHL Entry Draft. He played last season with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League.

Both players suited up for five games with Team Canada Black at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Veleno had a goal and four points while Bowers was held without a point.

Players will compete in Red and White intrasquad games between July 29 and Aug. 2 in Calgary. Twenty-two players will then be selected for Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 team for the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, Aug. 8-12 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Prospect Olivier Mathieu is among 111 players scheduled to attend Canada's National Under-17 development camp in Calgary. The 16-year-old from Drummondville spent last season with the Magog Cantonniers of the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League.

Players will be divided into six teams and compete in intrasquad games and practices between July 26 and Aug. 1. Early in the 2016-17 season, 66 players will be selected to make up three Canadian entries at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 5 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
