Potomac Nationals News Release

(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals completed their long climb back to .500 Saturday night with a 7-5 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. All the elements in their recent surge were on display in the series-clinching win: solid pitching, a big inning, and a Tyler Moore home run.

Moore got the scoring started with a blast to left field that led off the second inning. The Carolina League Player of the Month continued his torrid streak with his league-leading 23rd homer and 88th RBI.

Myrtle Beach tied it in the fourth inning off Major League rehab starter Garrett Mock. Samuel Sime blooped a two-out single to right field that scored Jordan Kreke.

Other than Moore's big fly, Potomac was silenced by Myrtle Beach starter Brett Oberholtzer, who struck out a career-high 12. That matched the most struck out by a Potomac opponent in 2010.

The moment Oberholtzer was lifted, Potomac cashed in. Paul Clemens came on in the sixth and was greeted by a bunt single by Francisco Soriano. After a Derek Norris walk, Chris Curran grounded out to second. But a hard slide and Curran's speed broke up the double play and sent runners to the corners with one away. Moore was walked to load the bases, and Sean Rooney made the Pelicans pay. Rooney crushed a double to right field that cleared the bases and made the score 4-1. An RBI groundout by Robbie Jacobsen and a double by Dan Lyons stretched Potomac's lead to half a dozen.

From there, the Potomac bullpen did its best to hang on. Jimmy Barthmaier gave way to Joe Testa with two on and no outs in the eighth. He got a double play on his first pitch, but ran into trouble thereafter. Cody Johnson and Sammy Sime smashed back-to-back homers to make it a three-run game at 7-4.

Myrtle kept coming in the ninth against Justin Phillabaum. With an unearned run already in and one out, Phillabaum struck out Michael Jones and Kreke to slam the door shut and lock up his third save.

The Nationals look to get above .500 for the fist time all year when they close out the homestand at 1 P.M. against the Pelicans. Marcos Frias will be opposed by Matt Crim, and the broadcast can be heard beginning at 12:45.
