Fisher Cats Take Series with 6-3 Win over Thunder

April 10, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

(Manchester, NH) - New Hampshire struck for five early runs and Trenton failed to capitalize on several chances to get back into the game as the Thunder fell to the Fisher Cats, 6-3, Wednesday morning at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in the rubber match of a three-game series. Starter Nik Turley (0-1) allowed ten hits in the first four innings while Trenton stranded 11 runners in the game, leaving the Thunder with a 3-3 record following its season-opening road trip.

After New Hampshire scored a pair of runs in the first, Ryan Schimpf drilled a three-run home run in the third against Turley, his league-leading third of the season, to put the Fisher Cats in front 5-1. Turley gave up multiple hits in each of his first four innings, but later settled down to retire the final seven he faced and made it through six innings of work.

The Thunder collected seven hits against New Hampshire starter Marcus Walden in his 4.1 innings pitched, but scored only single runs in the second and fifth and trailed 5-2 going into the eighth. Shane Brown and Kyle Roller collected RBI hits to give Trenton its first two tallies.

Casey Stevenson stroked a run-scoring single in the eighth against reliever Clint Everts, his sixth RBI in three games played, to cut the Thunder deficit to 5-3. Then with the tying runners on base and no outs, Everts induced a double-play groundout from Kyle Higashioka and later an inning-ending fly out from Walter Ibarra.

New Hampshire added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Aaron Dott when pinch-runner Kenny Wilson used his blazing speed to score from third on Jack Murphy's fielders choice grounder despite the fact the infield was playing in. Chad Beck then pitched around a walk and a single allowed to start the ninth by striking out Tyler Austin, Roller and Rob Segedin in succession to pick up his second save.

Trenton next comes to ARM & HAMMER Park for a seven-game homestand, welcoming Richmond for four games then Akron for three. The 2013 home opener will be Thursday at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Zach Nuding (0-1, 0.00) is expected to start for the Thunder against a pitcher yet to be determined. Limited tickets are available through the Thunder box office at (609) 394-3300 or online at www.trentonthunder.com. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
