Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
With an 8-2 record in their back pocket, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are coming home.
The Goldeyes fell 11-2 to the Lincoln Saltdogs Sunday afternoon before 2,183 fans at Haymarket Park in the final game of Winnipeg's 10-game road trip to begin the season.
Winnipeg and Lincoln split the four-game weekend series and the Goldeyes return to Shaw Park Monday night for their home opener in first place in the American Association's North Division.
Things went off the rails in a hurry Sunday afternoon for Winnipeg, as the Saltdogs tagged six runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning off Goldeyes starter Alex Capaul.
Lincoln added two more runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 10-1 lead after three innings.
Winnipeg's only response in the first three frames was a solo home run from Amos Ramon.
The Saltdogs tallied their other run in the fifth inning, while Fehlandt Lentini scored for Winnipeg in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a Lincoln error.
Capaul suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs - eight of which were earned - in three innings of work. Lincoln starter Joe Bisenius gave up just one run in seven innings to get the win.
Aaron Correa pitched three innings of relief, while Wes Alsup had three strikeouts in two innings to finish the game.
The Goldeyes will meet the Laredo Lemurs Monday night at Shaw Park in the team's home opener. Matt Rusch (2-0, 1.50) will face Laredo's David Newmann (1-0, 1.64). The Lemurs remain undefeated with a 10-0 record after sweeping the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a three-game series this weekend.
Monday's game will begin with a pre-game ceremony that will honour the Goldeyes' 2012 American Association Championship. Game time is 7 p.m.
There are a limited tickets remaining for the home opener, which be purchased by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
