First Outdoor Game in Pro Hoops History
April 9, 2008 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Indiana Fever News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association will make its mark on the professional basketball landscape when they play in the first regular season outdoor game in the sport's history. The Liberty Outdoor Classic, between the Liberty and the Fever, will take place at the home of the US Open -- Arthur Ashe Stadium, located in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens on Saturday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to making professional basketball history, the Liberty Outdoor Classic, sponsored by American Express and The Hallmark Channel, will be the first non-tennis sporting event to take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which is the largest public outdoor tennis facility in the world.
It is not the first time the Liberty and Fever have met in New York City at a venue other than Madison Square Garden. Due to the Republican National Convention in 2004, the Fever and Liberty played at Radio City Music Hall, with New York claiming a 77-71 overtime victory.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer, will serve as the beneficiary of the Liberty Outdoor Classic. A portion of the proceeds from the game's ticket sales, as well as various fundraising activities throughout the evening, will benefit the BCRF. This will be the second year that the Liberty has partnered with the BCRF for its annual Breast Health Awareness Night.
WNBA training camps open April 20 and the Fever hosts a preseason game on May 7 against the Minnesota Lynx (7:00 p.m.). Its regular season opener is May 17 at Conseco Fieldhouse against the Washington Mystics (7:00 p.m.). Led by WNBA All-Stars Tamika Catchings, Katie Douglas and Tammy Sutton-Brown, the Fever bids for its first WNBA Finals appearance after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in two of the past three seasons. Season tickets are available at FeverBasketball.com or by calling (317) 917-2500.
