Firecats' Cory Bailey to play with AFL's New Orleans VooDoo

October 13, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) - Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- Florida Firecats DS Corey Baily has inked a deal to play for the AFL's New Orleans VooDoo. Bailey becomes the Firecat's 2nd player to sign with an AFL team this week, OL/DL John Miller will be playing for Orlando next season as well.

"This is a great opportunity for Cory," said Firecats head Coach Kevin Bouis. "He's an exceptional player and with the numbers he put up he deserved this chance." Bailey led the league in 2006 with 117.5 tackles in the regular season, 3rd highest in af2 history.

The af2 rookie out of the University of Florida also broke the team record for tackles in a season last year (Sorrell 100.5 in 2004) becoming the 3rd different Firecat to register 100 or more tackles in a season (100.5 Kelly Snell in 2005). He and teammate Quincy Sorrell also became the first duo in league history to tally 100+ tackles on the same team in one season.

"He adapted to the game quickly in his 1st season and was the kind of guy who would run through a brick wall if you told him that's what was necessary to make a play" Bouis went on to say of Cory's playmaking abilities. "I think he'll do well in New Orleans."

"Our fans have known for years that we've had some great players on our team, now the rest of the country will get to see them play," Firecats President and GM Chris Vallozzi said of Bailey and Miller's jump to the AFL. "It's a testament to our coaches and our organization when a player gets the chance to prove himself at the next level."

The Firecats will hold their first open tryout at Estero High School Saturday November 4th. Players will be asked to participate in a Pro-Style combine. Workout attire and cleats are recommended. The tryout will be held outdoors and will begin at 11am. Registration will begin at 10am, but players are encouraged to per-register by calling the Firecats office at 239-390-CATS (2287), by contacting Coach Bouis directly at 239-645-6044 or by visiting the team online at www.floridafirecats.com

Last season WR/LB Brittney Tellis was discovered at an open tryout. Tellis finished the year 2nd on the team in receptions with 89 for 895 yards and 31 touchdowns.
