Firebirds Face off in Kitchener Friday

The Firebirds head to Kitchener, Ont. Friday night for their second regular season game of the 2016-17 campaign. Puck drop between the Firebirds and the Kitchener Rangers is set for 7:30 p.m. (ET) at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium (capacity, 7,777).

Friday night's contest will mark the first regular season game for the Rangers. Last season, Flint and Kitchener met four times with the Rangers winning three of the four contests. The first meeting between the two clubs saw a 5-3 win for the Rangers, followed by a 2-0 victory on Feb. 6. The Firebirds won the third meeting of the season 3-2 in Kitchener before falling in the last game.

Players to Watch: The Firebirds are coming off a 4-0 Opening Night victory on Wednesday night against the Saginaw Spirit. Rookie Ty Dellandrea scored his first Ontario Hockey League (OHL) goal during his first shift off of a one-timer pass from Nick Caamano 1:04 into the contest. Ryan Moore registered a four-point night, and first star honors after scoring twice, and recording two assists. Matthew Menna received third star honors in his 23 save shutout, the first of his OHL career. Special teams were a big part of the win after Moore and Caamano converted on shorthanded opportunities.

Kitchener has three of their top five scorers returning from last year, along with their starting goaltender. Their top scorer Adam Mascherin is coming off of an 81-point season after scoring 35 goals and 46 assists in 59 games. Jeremy Bracco was third on the Rangers last year with 64 points in 49 games, and Mason Kohn was fifth on the team with 46 points in 60 games. Luke Opilka is returning between the pipes as the Rangers starting goaltender. Opilka racked up 27 wins in 44 games, along with a goals against average of 2.70, and a save percentage of .906.

Broadcast Coverage: Friday night's game between the Firebirds and the Rangers will be broadcast live on 1330 AM WTRX Sports Xtra Radio throughout Mid-Michigan in addition to streaming online on the Sports Xtra Radio app here 147a3e9a&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) . Radio pregame coverage begins at 7 p.m.

The game will also be televised live on Rogers TV cable channel 20 in Kitchener and on channel 463 for cable subscribers throughout the province of Ontario on the OHL Action Pak. Up Next for Flint: The Firebirds return home to the Dort Federal Event Center tomorrow night against the Owen Sound Attack. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Saturday in Flint for Health Alliance Plan (HAP) night. Orange and white pom poms will be handed out to all fans in attendance and two lucky winners will receive a free Fitbit, courtesy of HAP.
