Firebirds Dropped by IceDogs in Niagara Friday

St. Catherines, Ont. - Kole Sherwood scored once and tallied an assist, Ryan Moore collected two points and Alex Peters found the back of the net as the Firebirds fell to the Niagara IceDogs 5-2 before a sellout crowd of 5,300 fans at the Meridian Center Friday night.

Kole Sherwood (Columbus Blue Jackets) opened the scoring for the Firebirds with 6:29 remaining in the first period after he buried a cross-crease pass from Ryan Moore out-of-the-box for his 21st goal of the season. With the goal, Sherwood is now on a seven-game point-streak, scored his seventh goal in the last three games and tallied his 20th point in the last 10 games. Ryan Moore's assist extends his point-streak to nine points in the last three consecutive games.

Rookie Akil Thomas evened the score 50 seconds later with his 15th goal of the season, on the power-play, after he fired a wrist-shot from the right-circle that beat Connor Hicks five-hole. The Firebirds headed to the locker room tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Flint regained their lead when captain Alex Peters scored his sixth goal of the season at the 8:33 mark of the second frame. Peters extended his point-streak to six games by one-timing a drop-pass in the slot from Moore at the left-circle, beating Stephen Dhillon glove-side to put Flint ahead 2-1. Peters recorded his 10th point in the last six contests.

Thomas tied the game for Niagara when he scored his 16th goal of the season and second of the night after he deked to his backhand on a breakaway and fired the puck top-shelf past Hicks.

The IceDogs earned their first lead of the game when Johnny Corneil netted a shorthanded goal on a breakaway, deking to his backhand, beating Hicks for his 17th goal of the season.

Corneil doubled Niagara's lead 29 seconds later when he scored his 18th goal of the season and second of the night burying a wrist-shot from the high-slot to increase Niagara's lead to 4-2.

Then, late in the third period, Aaron Haydon sealed the game with his fifth goal of the season shorthanded when he fired a shot into the empty net from center ice with 50 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Firebirds tied the IceDogs 1-1 on the season series after earning a 4-0 victory in Flint on Dec. 2. Niagara outshot Flint 43-40. The Firebirds were zero-for-seven on the power-play but were six-for-seven on the penalty-kill. Hicks made 39 saves on 43 shots.

The Firebirds return back to action when they travel to Erie to face the Otters this Saturday night, Jan. 14. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pa. The Firebirds return back to Flint Friday, Jan. 20 against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. During the month of January, fans may bring in three or more canned or boxed food items to receive a complimentary Silver Level ticket. Fans may drop off donated food at the Flint Firebirds Merchandise Store to receive the discount.

Single game tickets for the Flint Firebirds 2016-17 season are $12 for Bronze, $15 for Silver, $19 for Gold and $25 for VIP seating. Prices are unchanged from last season and all seats are reserved / assigned seating. Parking has been reduced to $5 dollars which is new this season.
