Chicago Fire FC News Release
JACKSON, Miss. - The Chicago Fire earned a convincing 6-0 victory over a college select team Wednesday afternoon at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.
The Fire took an early lead in the fifth minute as midfielder Justin Mapp beat a defender one-one down the left side. Mapp then curled in a left-footed cross to forward Tomasz Frankowski, whose deft header from five yards out found the lower right corner of the net.
Chicago doubled their lead in the 12th minute. A lofted pass from attacker Cuauhtémoc Blanco from the right wing was misplayed by an opposing defender in the 18-yard box, with forward Calen Carr closing down on the play. Carr put home the loose ball from eight yards out for a 2-0 lead.
In the 44th minute, Blanco shed two defenders to send a ball through to Frankowski with just the goalkeeper to beat. Frankowski juked to the right to pass by him and struck from 10 yards out to give the Fire a 3-0 advantage.
A give-and-go in the 60th minute between forward Andy Herron and midfielder Stephen King freed Herron for a strike just inside the penalty area. Herron's effort pinged off the ring post to King, who finished from six yards out to give the Fire a 4-0 lead.
In the 70th minute, Herron notched a goal of his own. The Costa Rican took a well-placed shot from the top of the 18-yard box just past the diving goalkeeper's outstretched hands and inside the right post to bring the score to 5-0.
Fire forward Chris Rolfe's shot from 23 yards out in the 75th minute deflected off an opponent's leg and straight up in the air, landing right back to Rolfe. Rolfe then dribbled toward goal and side-stepped the final defender before he chipped a shot over the goalkeeper from six yards out for the game's sixth and final goal.
The Fire will conclude their preseason slate against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, March 22, at M&F Bank Field in Ridgeland, Miss. at 3:30 p.m. CT. Chicago will begin their 2008 MLS Regular Season on the road Saturday, March 29, against Real Salt Lake at Rice-Eccles Stadium (5:00 CT, My50).
