May 19, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - Tacoma Rainiers
PAPILLION, Neb. - The Tacoma Rainiers (25-14) and Omaha Storm Chasers (20-19) exchanged shutouts while splitting a doubleheader on Thursday night at Werner Park.
The Rainiers collected a 1-0 victory in the first game, their sixth shutout win of the season, while the Storm Chasers responded with a 5-0 win in game two.
Tacoma game one starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd turned in his second straight scoreless outing, holding the Storm Chasers to just two hits with three strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work. Cloyd has not allowed a run and surrendered just four hits over his first 7.2 innings of work for Tacoma this season.
Despite putting the leadoff man on base via walk in four of the first five innings, the Rainiers didn't venture onto the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning in game one. Catcher Mike Zunino opened the frame with a walk, advanced to third on a single and fielder's choice, and came around to score on a wild pitch, giving Tacoma a 1-0 edge.
Emilio Pagan worked two scoreless, two-hit innings in relief of Cloyd to earn the win, his first of the year. Ryne Harper worked around a leadoff single to post a scoreless seventh inning, notching his second save.
Tacoma was limited to just five hits in the nightcap without posting a run. Rainiers game two starting pitcher Paul Paez limited Omaha to two runs (one earned) on two hits with a pair of strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work - he took the loss.
Omaha scored once in the bottom of the second in game two and extended their lead to 4-0 with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth. One more run for the Storm Chasers in the bottom of the sixth created the final margin of 5-0.
The Rainiers now travel to Iowa for a four-game series against the Cubs beginning on Friday. Tacoma has yet to announce a starting pitcher, while Iowa is expected to start right-hander Jake Buchanan (1-2, 5.71). First pitch is scheduled for 5:08 p.m. PT.
