Fillmyer Slows Down Missions as 'Hounds Even Series

June 24, 2017 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

Enyel De Los Santos took the ball Friday evening for the Missions looking to finally break his hex against the RockHounds. In his four starts against Midland, the young righty had pitched to a 15.15 ERA (23 ER/13.2 IP). On Friday, even in eventual defeat, De Los Santos put together a very strong effort against the three-time defending TL champs.

In six and two-thirds innings, De Los Santos (4-4) allowed just two runs on five hits and two walks, while fanning six. Midland broke a scoreless tie in the third when Jordan Tarsovich doubled then came home on a Brett Vertigan sacrifice bunt coupled with a fielding error by third baseman Ty France.

The RockHounds second run off De Los Santos came in his final inning of work in the seventh. Catcher Beau Taylor led off the frame with a double to right. Two batters later Vertigan gave the 'Hounds a 2-0 lead when he singled to right.

Unfortunately for San Antonio, De Los Santos was outdueled by fellow righty Heath Fillmyer. The Roebling, NJ native kept the Missions off the board over seven and a third innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, while punching out seven. Fillmyer (4-2) threw 69 of his 100 pitches for strikes.

Midland ended any hopes of a San Antonio comeback in the eighth with a four-run rally against reliever Chad Nading. Sam Bragg recorded the final five outs to wrap up the Midland victory.

San Antonio (2-2, 43-31) resumes its four-game series with Midland (1-3, 36-38) Saturday at 7:05 PM. Following the game there will be a special fireworks show courtesy of Metro PCS. Right-hander Chris Huffman (2-1, 2.18) will get the ball for the Missions Saturday, while the 'Hounds counter with lefty A.J. Puk (0-1, 3.86).

Notes: Infielder Jose Rondon was promoted to Triple-A El Paso before the game. There is no corresponding move at this time.
