Fightin Phils Game Recap

Reading Fightin Phils News Release

Reading, PA - In a rematch of the 2015 Championship Series featuring two of the most lethal offenses in the Eastern League, it's a shame that the Fightin Phils and Baysox aren't in the same division. After splitting the first two games with each one being decided by a run, it was only fitting that the deciding game came down to the slimmest of margins.

Although there wasn't much offense beyond the middle innings, the Fightins got a pair of two-RBI doubles from Jiandido Tromp and Osmel Aguila, and the bullpen provided 4.1 scoreless innings for a 4-3 win in front of 6,978 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Fightin Phils wasted no time getting after Baysox lefthander John Means, who surrendered a leadoff single to Scott Kingery in the bottom of the first. Two batters later, Carlos Tocci continued his phenomenal series with a single, setting the stage for Tromp. Batting fifth following a strikeout of Aguila, Tromp targeted the left field line and snuck a hard double down into the corner to give Reading a 2-0 lead.

As the latest addition to the Fightins rotation, John Richy's first start of 2017 began with leadoff singles in the first and second. In the first, D.J. Stewart would eventually get picked off first on a nice throw back to the bag from catcher Joel Fisher, who got involved later in the day. In the second, back-to-back singles from Aderlin Rodriguez and Tucker Nathans threatened Reading's 2-0 lead, but Richy got a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Yermin Mercedes. With a runner at third, Erick Salcedo made the final out by grounding out to Kingery at second base to keep the Fightin Phils ahead by two.

More help arrived in the third when Tocci and Andrew Pullin got on with one out singles after carrying the offense the previous two nights. On Wednesday, the heavy lifting was supplied by Aguila, who followed in Tromp's footsteps with a double off the top of the center field wall that doubled the lead to 4-0. The Fightin Phils would only got two more baserunners for the rest of the afternoon on a Fisher single in the fourth, and a pitch that hit Pullin in the fifth.

The Baysox started climbing back into it in the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out after a walk and a couple of singles. A wild pitch from Richy brought in the first run of the inning, and Mercedes' RBI groundout got the Baysox closer at 4-2. The final run came across during Richy's final inning in the fifth after Austin Wynns singled home a run to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Another single from Garabez Rosa put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but Mario Sanchez (1-0) started the bullpen carousel and got the last out before retiring the side in the sixth.

With Yacksel Rios on for the seventh, the reliable righty walked Stewart to start his day. He nearly lost the next hitter and got to 3-2 on Adrian Marin, but saved the inning with a called third strike and a bullet from Fisher down to second to nab Stewart on the move. The double play jolted Rios into retiring the next four hitters before Jesen Therrien came in and got his seventh save with an easy ninth inning.
