Wolves Snap Losing Streak with Win Over Nationals

By Jay Harris

Coach Phil Esposito and the Watertown Wolves looked to snap their 5-game losing streak as they faced the Cornwall Nationals at the Watertown Municipal Ice Arena. Esposito added some fire power to the Wolves acquiring forwards Ryan Connolly and Brad Townsend. The defense side of the team saw the return of former Watertown Wolf Stanislav Vlasov, and Justin Apcar-Blaszak from the Danbury Titans.

New Wolf Ryan Connolly would draw blood when Austin Daae and Jeremy Akeson got him the puck and put the Wolves on the board six minutes into the first period. Former Privateer and Wolf Kris McCarthy duked it out with another former Privateer and new Wolf Brad Townsend earning them each five for fighting. Watertown's Mark Petaccio helped to extend the Wolves' lead on his pass Jesse Facchini making the score at the end of the period 2-0.

Akeson and Nate O'Brien helped to keep the goals coming when they assisted Daae in getting the first goal of the second period. Cornwall refused to let goalie Denis Tsaruk record a shutout. Cornwall's Jason Dolgy was at the right place at the right time to slap a deflected shot from teammate Kris McCarthy into the goal and get on the board. Espostio's starting line-up for the night saw their third goal of the night when Daae and Connolly set up Akeson with the shot to tickle and give the Wolves a 4-1 lead at the end of the period.

Cornwall looked to mount a comeback four minutes into the third period when Jason Dolgy racked up his second goal of the night on assists from Lou Dickenson and MJ Graham. Kyle Powell retaliated with an incredible flip of the puck over the goalie while the Wolves were short-handed. Cornwall's Marley Keca responded with a power play goal to bring the Nationals within 3 goals again. The Wolves' sixth goal of the night came from Mark Petaccio on assistance from Jesse Facchini and Justin Apcar-Blaszak. Cornwall would get one more power play goal from Joel Trottier before the clock ran out. The Wolves finished the night with a 6-4 victory.
