FHL Connected: Game Recaps December 10, 2016

Carolina Thunderbirds News Release

After the previous evening's 4-3 overtime victory by the Titans against Port Huron, hopes were high that Danbury could follow up with a second victory before departing for Cornwall. However, Jo St. Pierre would steal the show as the Titans would fall by a 2-1 score.

It took a while for the two teams to test the waters after the puck was dropped on the first period. Offensively, however, nobody was able to light the lamp through the opening frame. It was not due to lack of effort, however, as Danbury outshot the Prowlers 17-8, with both goaltenders forced to make big saves. The period would be capped off with a fight between Matt Beer and Mike Dolman.

The 2nd period would finally see the red lamp being lit, as the Prowlers struck twice. The first goal game off a 5 on 3 by Scott Witmyer, assisted by Matt Robertson and Ahmed Mahfouz. They would strike again off a Stephen Gallo turnover, as Ahmed Mahfouz converted right in front of the net. The Titans found life late in the 2nd period, as John Schiavo scored his first as a Titan by dancing his way to the net mouth and beating Jo St. Pierre. A major stat about the period was the fact that the Prowlers led the shots, 16-13.

There would be fireworks to begin the 3rd period, as noted fighters Alexander Taulien and Jay Kenney squared off, off of the opening faceoff. Each team would have opportunities on the power play in the third period, but neither could find the back of the net. The Titans would have one last opportunity with Ivandikov pulled for the extra attacker, but St. Pierre would hold the fort and secure the victory and first star of the game honors.

The Titans remain in third place in the Federal Hockey League after only gaining two points in two games so far this weekend. The Titans will be in action again tomorrow visiting the Cornwall Nationals for the first trip to Canada in the franchise's history.

Wolves Fall to Dashers

By Jay Harris

The Watertown Wolves host the Danville Dashers at the Watertown Municipal Ice Arena in a rematch of last night's game.

The first period saw a lot of strong defense and alert net-minding. The period looked as if it would end in a scoreless tie until Danville's Daniel Turgeon scored an unassisted goal with just ten seconds remaining in the period.

It looked like the Wolves would tie the game up at the beginning of the second period. The officials called it a no-goal stating the puck was batted in with a player's glove. Tension between the teams started to mount after Danville goalie Storm Phaneuf earned a two-minute penalty for tripping. The Wolves would be the first to score that period with a goal from Austin Daae assisted by Jeremy Akeson and Matt Caranci. After penalties served by Mark Petaccio for tripping and Gerhett Sargis for slashing it was the Dashers to score next when Darius Cole and Easton Oliver set up Eric Witzel for a top shelf goal. Justin Levac would add to the lead on a pass from Daniel Turgeon to make the score 3-1. Matt Caranci would leave the game after taking a puck to the face. Animosity began to boil over in the last minute of the perod with Watertown's Brad Townsend and Danville's Aleh Shypitsyn earning five minutes for fighting and Danville's Storm Phaneuf earning two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Wolves looked to mount a comeback in the third period when they received a power play advantage on Darius Cole's crosscheck penalty. The Dashers had other plans however when Anton Lennartsson scored a short-handed goal advancing their lead to 4-1. Watertown coach Phil Esposito decided a switch in net minder was needed and replace Denis Tsaruk with Ed Zdolshek. The Wolves received another opportunity when M J Maerkl received two minutes in the box for crosschecking. Brian Marks and Colin McIntosh provided Jeremy Akeson with the shot to put another goal on the board for the Wolves. Danville added one final goal on an empty net from Justin Brausen. The Dashers bested the Wolves with a final score of 5-2.

The three stars of the game were Danville's Daniel Turgeon, Justin Brausen, and Watertown's Jeremy Akeson. The Wolves are back in action on Sunday, December 11 at 5:00 pm against the Saint Claire Shores Fighting Saints in the Watertown Municipal Ice Arena.

Nationals Fall to Fighting Saints on Home Ice

by Rodney Wilso n

CORNWALL - The St. Clair Shores Fighting Saints edged the Nationals 4-3 on Saturday night at the Civic Complex in front of 607 fans.

Blake Naida scored the game-winning goal with a gorgeous deke to his backhand on a penalty shot at 4:42 of the third.

The Fighting Saints opened the scoring 3:30 into the game when Brandon Fehd beat a sprawling Nicolas Delongchamps. Cornwall responded on a goal by defenceman Mikael Pregent, who's shot from the point squeezed past Andy DiCristofaro at 13:09 of the opening frame.

MJ Graham, with his 8th of the season, connected on a pretty feed from Jason Dolgy to give the Nationals a 2-1 lead with 3:31 to play in the second. But Zach Zulkanycz beat Delongchamps on a nifty deke with 39.3 seconds to play in the period.

Marley Keca pounced on a rebound off the end boards to give the Nationals a lead 3:26 into the third but the Fighting Saints leveled the score 39 seconds later on Fehd's second of the contest.

That set the stage for Naida's penalty shot.

St. Clair outshot Cornwall 52-31. Fehd (first), Zulkanycz (second) and Delongchamps were the announced stars.

The Nationals are back on home ice Sunday afternoon, when they face the Danbury Titans at 1 p.m. It's a special promotion game with $5 tickets for fans of all ages.

ROAD LOSS: On Friday night at Berlin, Jiri Pestuka scored four goals to lead the River Drivers to an 11-3 victory over the Nationals. JC Houde, with two, and Graham had the Cornwall goals.
