FC Edmonton News Release

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - FC Edmonton entered its last game of the 2013 Fall season with intentions of ending on a high note as they battled the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Lockhart Stadium in Florida.

Action began quickly as the first goal came in the 9th minute, unfortunately with the Strikers drawing first blood. As Eddies captain Albert Watson went to block a shot, the ball went off his leg and ricocheted off his arm, forcing a penalty kick. Strikers midfielder Carlos Salazar stepped up and pulled a cheeky chip shot straight down the middle, giving the Fort Lauderdale side a 1-0 lead.

The first card of the game came in the 16th minute, as FCE's left back Lance Laing made a hard challenge on a Strikers midfielder. The second caution came in the 30th minute when Eddies right back Eddie Edward came in with a hard tackle from behind.

Just before the half, a set piece came for the Eddies 15 yards outside the box. Corey Hertzog touched the ball on for Neil Hlavaty, but his shot rose above the bar. The half came not long after, with the Strikers ahead 1-0 through 45 minutes.

The second half began much better for the Eddies than the first did, as Hertzog drove a volley towards goal in the 52nd minute, but the Strikers defenders were equal to the challenge to block it and force a corner.

The Eddies made their first substitution in the 61st minute as Northern Ireland's Robert Garrett was subbed off for Massimo Mirabelli.

The 65th minute saw an odd situation, as Strikers midfielder Gonzalo De Mujica was shown a straight red card for some activity in between whistles. The Strikers had just over 25 minutes to play with 10 men.

Momentum continued for the Eddies as FCE striker Sadi Jalali broke through one-on-one into the Strikers zone. A good move put him one step ahead, and he was taken down in the box. With no call coming, Massimo Mirabelli followed up with a great heads-up play and managed a good shot on net, but Sanchez came up big with a great positional save.

FCE finally broke the scoresheet. Mirabelli got his chance again in the 74th minute, when he was sprung on the left side. His patience paid off, as he waited for Sanchez to go down and buried the ball between his legs, tying things up at one.

FCE's Hanson Boakai got his chance on the NASL pitch after his play at the U-17 World Cup, as he was subbed in for Edem Mortotsi in the 82nd minute.

After some small opportunities from either side, the full-time whistle came with a 1-1 draw. This was the 11th 1-1 draw the Eddies have played to.
