FC Cincinnati News Release

CINCINNATI, OH - FC Cincinnati has announced the acquisition of Casey Townsend from Wilmington Hammerheads. Per terms of the transfer agreement, Townsend will not suit up against Wilmington in this Sunday's match and no additional contract details will be disclosed per USL and team policy. The 27-year-old joins FCC after playing with the Hammerheads in 2016, where he scored a pair of goals and an assist for five points.

Townsend elaborated on his joining FCC, "I am thankful to my Wilmington coaches, teammates, and staff for everything they have done for me during my time here. I wish them nothing but the best as the season comes to an end, and greatly look forward to a promising future with FC Cincinnati."

"As we look towards the final four games of the regular season and the playoffs, we wanted to ensure we had a full roster available to us and Casey will give the club some depth." said President and General Manager, Jeff Berding. "He has been with some good clubs and will be a great option to have in the attacking third."

Townsend transferred to Wilmington in May of 2015 from Oklahoma City Energy FC and played with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL in 2014.

In 2013, Townsend was traded to D.C. United in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Townsend made his first start with D.C. United on May 11, 2013 in the club's match at FC Dallas. Townsend's first shot of the game came in the ninth minute, which hit off the post.

The following March, Townsend was loaned to United's USL affiliate, Richmond Kickers, for the 2013 season. Townsend scored his first goals for Richmond on April 13, 2013 en route to a 4-1 victory over Charleston Battery. His immediate success in Richmond resulted in Townsend being recalled for the D.C. United fixture against Philadelphia on April 21, although Townsend did not make an appearance.

He launched his professional career with Chivas USA after being selected in the first round (No. 5 overall) of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Townsend made his debut as a 77th-minute substitute during a 1-0 loss against Houston Dynamo on March 11, 2012. He played four years (2008-11) at the University of Maryland, where he was named a 2011 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, a 2011 NSCAA All-American First Team, and All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team in both 2010 and 2011.
