Fast Start Carries Eagles to 3-2 Win over Tigres

Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY- It wasn't the high scoring slugfest fans have Centre 200 have seen plenty of in 2017-18, but the Screaming Eagles won for the fourth time in five games with a tight 3-2 victory over Victoriaville.

A quick start helped spark the home team, as just 3:02 in Ryan Francis snapped a top corner shot over Tristan Côté-Cazenave. The Eagles outshot the Tigres 11-7 and would finish the period strong as well, as Gabriel Proulx scored his first QMJHL goal in the final minute of the period. Proulx watched the puck come out of a battle behind the net, joined the play in front of the goal and put it by the Victoriaville netminder to make it a 2-0 score.

Special teams would be the story of the middle stanza, beginning with a five minute major for interference to Peyton Hoyt. Hoyt was whistled for a late hit on Ivan Kosorenkov, but the fans at Centre 200 disagreed, voicing their displeasure by booing both the officials and the Kosorenkov each time he touched the puck. Cape Breton would kill off the major, but would be short handed for additional 50 seconds.

There were no whistles in the final 3:27 of the major, so the Screaming Eagles did not have a chance to put anyone in the box to serve the penalty. Sacha Roy was able to earn a whistle for the Eagles by shoving the puck into goaltender Kyle Jessiman. And the whistle would come with a bonus, as the Eagles would get a power play as Alexandre Grisé was sent off for roughing.

As the Eagles generated pressure, Andrew Smith was given a penalty for checking from behind. Jessiman was on his way to the bench for the extra attacker when Drake Batherson would tip a puck past Côté-Cazenave. As Smith was serving his penalty, Mathieu Sévigny was also sent off. But the Tigres were able to kill off both the 5 on 3 and 5 on 4. Perhaps the penalty kill sparked the visitors as just 16 seconds after Sévigny left the box he would a cross ice pass to Kosorenkov, and the Russian forward put Victoriaville on the board.

That two goal margin would remain intact for most of the third period, as the Tigres outshot the Eagles 13-9 in the final twenty minutes but Kyle Jessiman stood tall. Victoriaville would get back into the game on a late power play, as Kosorenkov would find the back of the net on one timer, with the Tigres goalie pulled, with 1:28 remaining to cut the lead to 3-2.

Côté-Cazenave would be lifted late again as Victoriaville looked for the tying goal. With nine seconds left, Maxime Comtois would earn a prime scoring opportunity, but would be turned aside by Jessiman. Just seconds later, Chase Harwell of Victoriaville would be whistled for high sticking and it would spoil any hope of a comeback for the road squad.

Jessiman picked up the win, stopping 27 of 29 shots. Côté-Cazenave took the loss, stopping 25 of 28 shots. The game also marked Hoyt's return to the lineup after missing four games with an injury. He registered a shot on goal prior to his game misconduct.

Next up the Screaming Eagles finish their three game home stand with their annual Pink in the Rink game, against provincial rivals the Halifax Mooseheads. The game goes Saturday, October 28th, and puck drop is 7 PM.
