Louisville City FC News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The final six hours of the USL Goal of the Season online voting erupted on Wednesday, as Louisville City midfielder Aodhan Quinn propelled up the ranks. Beginning the day with less than 10 percent of the vote, Quinn's swirling free kick against the Tulsa Roughnecks surged into a landslide victory by the 3 p.m. voting deadline.

"I saw the club was pushing it on social media and that people were paying attention, but also my sisters found out about it," Quinn said. "They sent it through their social movement to all my family and friends here in the States and to my family in Ireland.

"They were actually kind of mad that I didn't tell them I was up for the award."

Already in a packed local news cycle (with the University of Louisville playing in the Music City Bowl), Quinn's Twitter handle was the No. 1 trending item in Louisville. When the poll closed, Quinn finished with a 39 percent margin and 3,193 of the more than 8,000 total votes.

"I didn't think I'd win it because there were so many great goals and so many good candidates - I mean it was against a whole season's worth of goals," Quinn said. "With just about an hour left in voting, my sister called and told me I was in first place. That was special and is just a testament to the fans of Louisville City, soccer fans across the country and especially to my family for voting.

"When I heard that it was trending on social media, that's special for the Club. It's something you see happen to big-time movie stars or singers; I never would think I'd be the number one trending item in Louisville. Especially in the end of December when we're in the offseason."

The 2015 USL season saw nearly 1,000 goals scored, with many of them of the spectacular variety. Throughout the year, USL asked fans to vote on the best each month, with the eight winners of Goal of the Month and seven honorable mentions nominated for the 2015 Goal of the Season.

The midfielder couldn't have placed his far-post curving shot any better, with the ball dipping into the upper-90, leaving the Tulsa Roughnecks keeper helpless. Quinn's spectacular strike made it to SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays, marking the first time that a professional team from Louisville has been featured on the Worldwide Leader in Sports.

"I mean I just tried to hit it cleanly and concentrate on where to put it," Quinn said. "Ever since I've been playing, I've practiced free kicks with my dad. It's a skill that I've always wanted to have in my arsenal, but they can be difficult because they don't always come off in a match the way you practice.

"But sometimes they do, and you get special moments like the goal against Tulsa."
