Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons recovered after falling behind by two early goals but lost in overtime to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by a 4-3 score on Friday night.
Just 20 seconds into the game, Steve Oleksy scored on a shot from the blue line for his first of the year. The shot deflected off the stick of Falcons defenseman Steven Delisle with assists credited to Anton Zlobin and Carter Rowney. At 4:24 Tom Sesito deflected a shot on the power play past Niklas Treutle to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead. His third of the year was assisted by Josh Archibald and Tim Erixon.
A great duration of the second period was spent scoreless until 5:57 left when Delisle redeemed the earlier goal by firing a slap shot past Penguins goaltender, Matt Murray. His second of the season was assisted by Philip Samuelsson and Greg Carey to move the game to a 2-1 score into the third.
Zlobin picked up a goal just 28 second into the third period for his first of the year and second point of the night. The goal put the Penguins up by a 3-1 score and was assisted by Reid McNeill and Rowney. Greg Carey closed the game within a goal by scoring off of a rebound from a Samuelsson shot. His seventeenth of the year was scored at 5:57 and was also assisted by Alex Grant. Carey added another goal 1:42 after his first to tie the game at a 3-3 score. His second of the night was a deflection from a Cunningham shot. The goal forced overtime despite a delay of game penalty in the closing minute of regulation.
The penalty carried into overtime where the Penguins took advantage of the situation. Rowney scored 24 seconds into the extra frame for his eighth of the year. Kael Mouillerat and Will O'Neill assisted on the game winning goal. Treutle stopped 24 shots in the loss. The Falcons fired 45 shots on Murray, the most the team has totaled in one game this season.
The Falcons travel to Syracuse, New York for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff against the Crunch tomorrow night. The game can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN. Following the Syracuse trip, the Falcons return home for three consecutive home games on Saturday, February 13, Sunday, February 14 and Tuesday, February 16.
