Falcons Turn Tables on Worcester, Win 3-1

January 16, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA – David LeNeveu made 36 saves and Peter Ferraro scored twice as the Springfield Falcons defeated the Worcester IceCats, 3-1, before a crowd of 4,357 at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday evening. Defenseman Dustin Wood also tallied for the Falcons, scoring his first goal in the American Hockey League. The win allowed the Falcons to gain a split of a home-and-home series after the club fell to the IceCats in Worcester by the same 3-1 score on Wednesday.

Ferraro potted both of his goals in the second period to provide the Falcons with their two-goal lead. On his first goal, Ferraro stick-handled the puck through the Worcester defense after receiving a cross-ice pass from center Erik Westrum in the neutral zone and scored from the low slot 3:38 into the frame. The marker ended a 17-game goal-scoring drought for Ferraro.

The Port Jefferson, New York native connected again 7:13 later by completing a three-on-two Falcons rush. Ferraro shot the puck into the net from his knees after receiving a centering pass from Nikos Tselios and being subsequently hauled down by an IceCats defender.

LeNeveu protected the Falcons lead with several sparkling saves in the final two periods including a glove save on a point-blank IceCatsÂ’ opportunity in the middle frame. The rookie also slid from post to post to stop a power-play bid by Worcester defenseman Trevor Byrne in the third period.

LeNeveu left the game with 1:49 remaining to play due to cramping in his right leg muscles. Jean-Marc Pelletier completed the game in the FalconsÂ’ net without having to handle any shots.

Ferraro nearly completed a hat trick in the closing minute while the Worcester crease was vacated for an extra skater. However, the right wingÂ’s shot from the FalconsÂ’ blue line was off target.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead 4:46 into the game when WoodÂ’s shot from the right point carried past IceCats goaltender Curtis Sanford.

Moments after Falcons defenseman Matthew Spiller exited the penalty box to end a Worcester power play, IceCats center Blake Evans poked in a rebound during a scramble in front of the Springfield net. The marker tied the game, 1-1, with 9:55 remaining in the first period.

Falcons defenseman Mike Wilson, who was injured in WednesdayÂ’s game at Worcester, served as an assistant coach behind the Springfield bench. Wilson filled in for Gord Dineen who is in Utah to have his #2 jersey retired by the Utah Grizzlies in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday evening.

The Falcons now turn their attention to the Lowell Lock Monsters whom theyÂ’ll face on Saturday night at the Civic Center. Game time is 7:35 p.m. The clubs will also meet Sunday in Lowell. To order tickets to SaturdayÂ’s contest, please call the Civic Center box office at (413) 787-6600.
