Falcons Blow a 5-0 Lead

June 19, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Kelowna Falcons News Release

It was another night of heartbreak for the Kelowna Falcons (6-7) as they blew a 5-0 lead deep in the bottom of the ninth to the Gresham GreyWolves (5-6). The Falcons has played a great game up until then, as the offense and defense seemed to be clicking.

The boys out of British Columbia had the early lead and put up a pair of runs early in the first frame. They added three more in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Those runs would hold up till the bottom of the ninth, where the Falcons tried to close out the game and even the series.

But Gresham was relentless, and they managed to claw their way back into the game and score four runs in the bottom of the ninth. The situation because dire and the Falcons went into survival mode. Colby Nealy, who pitched a gem of a game until late, was lifted from the game after the bases became loaded, and was replaced by Blake McKinney.

Riley Moore came in after and tried to stop the bleeding but it was not to be as the GreyWolves, cheered on by the Gresham crowd, put the typing run in and then walked the Falcons off in dramatic fashion 6-5.

Michael Bennett, the Falcons pitching coach, praised his starter, Colby Nealy. He said, "early on, Nealy was struggling to find the strike zone. He was then able to settle down and and get into his groove. I've been working with him on standing tall on the mound and driving through on back leg with his release. He's been working really hard and I think he showed up tonight."

It was absolutely heartbreaking for the Falcons, as they were up 5-0 for the majority of the game before the late collapse. The birds have now lost three straight games, dating back to the series against the Corvallis Knights earlier in the week.

Jake Simmons, the right-handed pitcher out of Walla Walla Community College, will be on the mound tomorrow as the Falcons look to avoid the sweep. The boys will be retuning home on Monday in order to host the aforementioned Knights in a three game series. The Cowlitz Black Bears will be in town for a weekend series as well going Friday through Sunday.

The Falcons will look to break their losing skid in the series final between themselves and the GreyWolves.
