Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Despite holding down the Quad Cities River Bandits to just one hit through the first nine innings, the Kane County Cougars were unable to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, falling 3-1 in 13 innings.
Michael Heesch made the start for the Cougars (0-4) and limited the River Bandits (4-0) to just one hit in 6.1 innings. That hit came in the top of the fifth as Jobduan Morales knocked a double to right to bring home Terrell Joyce with the first run of the game.
Quad Cities remained in front by a tally until the bottom of the seventh when Dan Vogelbach led off the frame with a single. Vogelbach advanced to third on a knock from Rock Shoulders and scored when Willson Contreras flew out to right.
Both teams continued in a 1-1 stalemate all the way until the 13th when Eddie Orozco (0-1) coughed up a one-out triple to Teoscar Hernandez. Hernandez crossed the plate after a passed ball, and Carlos Correa later scored on a single from Jesse Wierzbicki to finish the scoring.
Cameron Lamb (1-0) walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 13th, but the Cougars couldn't move Oliver Zapata off of first base. The Cougars did not record a base hit in extra innings against Lamb and John Neely, who worked 3.1 innings. Felix Pena was also effective out of the Cougars' bullpen as he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings.
The Cougars welcome the Clinton Lumberkings (Single-A Seattle Mariners) to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Monday afternoon at 3:00. Right-hander Lendy Castillo (0-0) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Dylan Unsworth (0-0). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
