Extra Effort Required in Tribe's 2-1 Win

May 9, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

MOOSIC, PA -- Catcher Tony Sanchez doubled home right fielder Jerry Sands with one out in top of the eleventh as the Indianapolis Indians earned a series victory with a 2-1 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Thursday night at PNC Field.

Sands and Sanchez entered the top of the 11th inning as the only two Tribe batters without a hit in the 1-1 marathon affair on Thursday night. The duo, however, came through with their first two base knocks of the night at the most important times as Sands lifted a one-out double to right, before Sanchez plated him with a two-bagger of his own for what proved to be the game-winning score.

The extra-inning rally supported another stellar effort from the Tribe pitching staff which held Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to just one run on four hits over 11.0 innings.

Indians RHP Gerrit Cole (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) began the game with his third straight quality start, allowing just one run on four singles and two walks, while striking out five over 7.0 innings of work. Over his last three outings Cole has now posted a superb 1.80 ERA (4 ER in 20.0 IP) allowing just seven hits, while striking out 12 over 20.0 innings pitched.

Following Cole, LHP Mike Zagurski (2.0 IP, 5 SO) continued his dominant run out of the Tribe bullpen, striking out the side in the eighth, before punching out two more in the ninth. Over his last five outings Zagurski has allowed just one hit and recorded 14 of his 19 outs via the strikeout.

Right handed flamethrower Erik Cordier (1.0 IP, 3 BB, 2 SO) used two strikeouts to work around three walks and toss a scoreless 10th to earn his first victory of the season. Closer Vic Black (1.0 IP, 1 SO) then finished out the contest with a perfect 11th to notch his team-leading ninth save of the season.

Scranton starter Caleb Cotham (4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) turned in a quality outing in his Triple-A debut, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out five over 4.2 innings pitched. RailRiders relievers Mark Montgomery (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO), Cody Eppley (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 SO) and Jim Miller (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 SO) combined for 5.2 scoreless frames of relief, before RHP Kelvin Perez (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB) allowed the single score in the 11th.

The RailRiders jumped out to the first lead of the contest when LF Ronnier Mustelier lined a one out single to center in the bottom of the fourth, before stealing second, and moving up to third on a groundout. 3B David Adams them plated Mustelier with a two-out base hit to left to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 1-0 advantage.

Indianapolis quickly answered the one-run RailRiders rally with one swing of the bat in the following frame as DH Brett Carroll blasted his team-leading fourth home run of the season to left-center field. After hitting just 10 home runs through the first 19 games this season, Tribe batters have now left the yard in seven of their last nine contests.

The Indians were able to hold in check three-time American League All-Star Curtis Granderson who, making a rehab appearance with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, went 1-for-3 with an infield single.

Following a 4-4 road trip the Indians now return home for an eight-game homestand beginning with a 7:15 p.m. contest against the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday night. RHP Brooks Brown (1-0, 0.57 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Indianapolis, while Toledo is expected to counter with RHP Shawn Hill (0-3, 3.99).

The contest will be televised on HTSN, Hometown Sports and News, available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.
