Express Ride Four-Run First Past Zephyrs

August 25, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The Round Rock Express pounced for four runs in the first inning en route to a 5-2 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Thursday night.

Each of the game's first four batters reached base against Z's starter Jake Esch, capped by Matt Duffy's two-run single. Ronald Guzman added a two-run double as the Express sent all nine hitters to the plate in the opening frame.

The Zephyrs got a two-out double from Destin Hood in the bottom of the inning, and a throwing error by opposing pitcher Nick Martinez on Matt Juengel's infield single allowed Hood to score.

Round Rock responded in the top of the second, capitalizing on a leadoff walk to Drew Robinson to stretch its lead back to four runs, courtesy of Duffy's RBI single.

Hood collected his 80th RBI of the season in the third with a sacrifice fly, but the Zephyrs stranded runners at second and third in both the fourth and fifth innings and finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Esch (2-1) settled in to give the Zephyrs five innings, but suffered the loss by surrendering five runs and seven hits.

Martinez was lifted after making 89 pitches in four innings. Tanner Scheppers pitched a scoreless fifth before turning the lead over to Yohander Mendez (3-1), who tossed four hitless frames to get the victory.

The Z's and Express continue the series on Friday at 7 p.m.
