Express Drop Rain-Shortened Contest 3-1
Game Called in Fifth Inning after Heavy Rains hit Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Round Rock Express (11-12) couldn't handle the Memphis Redbirds (12-11) or mother nature on Saturday night as the home side collected a rain-shortened 3-1 victory after just four and a half innings of play at AutoZone Park.
Express reliever RHP Brady Dragmire (0-2, 3.95) suffered the loss after giving up a pair of runs on one hit and a walk in two innings. Starter RHP Clayton Blackburn left the game with an undisclosed injury during the first at-bat of the third inning. He gave up a run on no hits and three walks in two innings. Memphis starter RHP Arturo Reyes (3-0, 1.89) collected the win, giving up just one run on two hits in five innings.
Round Rock jumped out to an early lead thanks to a leadoff Josh Wilson home run in the top of the third. However, the Redbirds responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Blackburn threw four pitches to Redbirds 2B Breyvic Valera before having to leave the contest. Dragmire emerged from the bullpen and walked Valera to complete the plate appearance. In the next at-bat, CF Tommy Pham grounded to 1B Ronald Guzman, who threw an errant pass to SS Luis Marte on the force attempt. The ball rolled into center field as Valera rounded second base. CF Jared Hoying then committed the second error of the inning, throwing a wild pass back to the infield that allowed Valera to score and Pham to reach third.
The strange inning continued as LF Todd Cunningham worked a walk. In the next at-bat, Dragmire committed a balk, sending Pham home and Cunningham to second. Following a pair of outs, Dragmire surrendered an RBI single to DH Patrick Wisdom. After RF Harrison Bader was hit with a pitch, Dragmire struck out SS Paul DeJong to mercifully end the inning.
The rains came in the middle of the fifth inning, washing away any chance of completing the contest.
Round Rock and Memphis will continue their series on Sunday afternoon. E-Train RHP Dillon Gee (1-2, 4.50) is slated to take the mound against Redbirds RHP Chris Ellis (0-3, 8.20). First pitch at AutoZone Park is set for 2:05 p.m. Round Rock returns home to Dell Diamond on Tuesday, May 2 to open an eight-game homestand.
