Express Cash In For Sweep Of Omaha
April 14, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Kevin Cash's three-run triple with one out in the bottom of the eighth erased a one-run deficit and sent the Round Rock Express to a 7-5 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers in Thursday night's Pacific Coast League series finale at The Dell Diamond. The Express swept the Storm Chasers in the process, the first series sweep by Round Rock since Aug. 9-12, 2009, when the Express swept Portland. Round Rock concluded its first home stand of the season 5-3.
Cash's last triple in professional baseball came five years and one day earlier - April 13, 2006, in a game for the Triple-A Durham Bulls against Richmond. It was only his sixth career three-bagger and fourth at the Triple-A level or higher.
As anomalous as Cash's triple was, the plate appearance prior to his heroics was equally bizarre. Craig Gentry flied out to Omaha center fielder Lorenzo Cain with one out and runners at first and second. However, Omaha catcher Lucas May was called for catcher's interference, loading the bases with one out. Cash drilled Louis Coleman's 0-1 offering off the base of the wall in left-center, clearing the bases and erasing Omaha's 5-4 lead.
That made a winner of Express reliever Ramon Aguero (1-0), who worked 1.0 scoreless inning on no hits and one walk with one strikeout. Zach Phillips pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. Starter Zach Jackson allowed five runs on nine hits and no walks with four strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Coleman (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs - two earned - on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in his only inning of work. Omaha starter Kevin Pucetas held the Express to two runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings.
Brian Barden was 2-for-4 with a run scored, extending his multiple-season hitting streak to 28 games - the longest active streak in the PCL. He has multiple hits in five straight games. Chad Tracy and Luis Cruz each had two hits with the former scoring twice.
Eric Hosmer's two-run homer in the top of the first staked the Storm Chasers to an early lead. Tracy tied the score with a two-run homer of his own in the fourth. Omaha (2-6) quickly recaptured the lead as Irving Falu led off the fifth with a single and later scored on Cain's RBI double. Clint Robinson's sixth-inning leadoff homer pushed the Omaha lead to 4-2, but Cruz tied the game again with a two-run homer in the sixth.
Omaha claimed its final lead of the night in the seventh when Paulo Orlando singled with one out and later scored on David Lough's RBI fielder's choice.
Round Rock begins its first road trip of the season Friday, opening a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs. First pitch in Friday's series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. Right-hander Brett Tomko (0-1, 9.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while the Zephyrs counter with right-hander Tim Koehler (0-0, 1.50 ERA).
