Experience Draws Revs to Barrett, Freeman
December 14, 2012 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - For the third straight year the New England Revolution was one of the most active teams in Stage Two of the Re-Entry Process, picking up the rights to forward Chad Barrett and defender Hunter Freeman on Friday afternoon.
The league is now required to extend contract offers to Barrett and Freeman within seven days.
Both players are 27 years old with seven years MLS experience, attractive qualities to a Revolution side in search of more veteran leadership. Barrett has scored 42 goals in almost 200 career appearances with Chicago, Toronto and LA, while Freeman has made 126 appearances with Colorado, New York, Toronto and Houston.
"I like that about both guys," said head coach Jay Heaps. "They have experience, so they're MLS-tested."
Barrett would add depth at the forward position, particularly with 2012 leading scorer Saer Sene likely to miss the start of the season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL. Freeman is primarily a right back but has the versatility to play anywhere along the backline, an area the Revs are looking to reinforce.
Heaps and the technical staff spent recent days wading through the list of available players and assessing all the pertinent circumstances, ultimately deciding Barrett and Freeman presented the most potential value.
"There are a lot of factors," said Heaps. "There are salary considerations, there are positional considerations. In the last 10 days I spent a lot of time breaking down the film of these players and what I thought would help us the best. These were players that I've known because I've played against them, but also I've seen enough film to know that they add a lot of value."
