Everything to Play for in Silver Knights Regular Season Home Finale

February 26, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Silver Knights of the MISL will look to continue their recent run of late season success and keep their playoff hopes alive in their regular season home finale when the league's two-time defending champion, the Milwaukee Wave, visits the Oncenter War Memorial Arena on Wednesday, February 27, at 7p.m.

After the Knights kept their playoff hopes alive on Saturday, February 16, by completing the season sweep of five consecutive wins over their I-90 rivals, the Rochester Lancers, 17-15 in overtime, Syracuse was forced the follow it up in a must win situation as they faced a season sweep of their own when the Wichita Wings visited the Oncenter War Memorial Arena last Friday.

After taking a 6-4 lead into the halftime break, star forwards Neto and Andriy Budnyy struck quickly into the third quarter to open up a 6-point lead that the orange and black (wearing pink jerseys to be auctioned to benefit the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund) would hold on to for the rest of the night. Neto's goal, his second of the night, marked his team-leading and third overall in the MISL 32 tally of the year and brought his point total to a staggering 73.

With just three games left on the regular season schedule, Syracuse is faced with the task of making up 1.5 games on the expansion side, the Chicago Soul, for the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. "Obviously, it's a huge game for us. We haven't beaten Milwaukee yet, and we're looking to beat Milwaukee to give us some confidence heading into the playoffs." said President and Head Coach, Tommy Tanner. "I think our team is playing extremely well right now. Against Milwaukee you can't make any mistakes because they always seem to capitalize on every single one you make. They're locked into second place and we're fighting for our playoff lives, so hopefully my guys will go out there and battle."

Chicago (10-14) has just the final two games of their schedule left to play as they host the Missouri Comets on Wednesday before clashing with the Knights on Friday March 1. A Chicago win and Syracuse loss on Wednesday would eliminate the Knights from playoff contention, but the inverse situation would create an elimination showdown when Syracuse visits Chicago on Friday.

Rochester, one of the three sides (joining Syracuse and Chicago) vying for the final playoff spot, has completed its regular season with a record of 10-16 after earning a massive 9-8 home win over Milwaukee on Sunday and keeping the possibility of their own playoff birth alive.

After picking up two losses in two days last weekend, the Wave (18-5 and locked into #2 seed) are likely to be nursing tired legs Wednesday night but have managed to defeat Syracuse in the previous two games by just single goal on both occasions.

The Silver Knights urge fans to support their team, as they have done all year long, as they look to avenge the heartbreaking losses to Milwaukee and continue their dream of playoffs in the regular season home finale Wednesday night.
