Evansville Thunderbolts News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - Evansville rebounded from last weekend's trip to Pensacola with a 5-2 win against the Ice Flyers on Ford Center ice Friday night. Last week, Evansville surrendered a three-goal third period lead to Pensacola and eventually lost in overtime. Friday night, Evansville built a two-goal lead after two periods and withstood a third period rally while Tanner Milliron recorded his tenth win of the season.
Each team had a goal in the first period. Chase Nieuwendyk scored his first goal with the Thunderbolts. He has a goal and an assist in three games this season. The goal was assisted by Mark Petaccio and Frank Schumacher. The Ice Flyers responded with a goal by Aaron Clarke.
Evansville carried the play in the second period outshooting their opponent 23-12 through 40 minutes of play. However, the score would stay locked at one until the last two minutes of the period. Evansville regained the lead on Tyler Gjurich's twelfth of the season. After the faceoff to the right of Ice Flyer netminder Matt Zenzola, Gjurich found the loose puck and deflected it past the netminder. Dave "Slick Willy" Williams assisted on the goal. Less than a minute later, Petaccio scored the goal of the season. Petaccio picked up a loose puck and rushed down the right wing and made two dazzling moves to put the puck past Zenzola. Petaccio has seven points in eight games with Evansville.
Pensacola quickly cut into the lead to start the third period. Former Thunderbolt Josh Harris deflected a puck off his chest and past Milliron after a great play in the offensive zone by Sean Gammage. The goal occurred 62 seconds into the third period. The Ice Flyers mounted an attack to tie the score and outshot the Thunderbolts 11-6 in the period. Chad Bennett launched a perfect backhanded sauce on to the tape of Gjurich who fired a backhander of his own over the Ice Flyer netminder. Williams finished the scoring with an empty net goal.
